Sancho, they didnt exactly have stringent requirements for the paints to keep the same shade, so the colours would vary from batch to batch, often quite radicly.
I remember reading comments about how the skyblue could vary from light blue to dark blue depending on which bucket you chose

But..I tend to lean towards the greener version of the olive drab

Also, that picture appears to be a WW2 one, where the colours were often over-saturated.
As for the shape-oddities, it seems to be, if not deliberate, then a necessity due to polygon-count restriction.
