Yup nother winge session

Don't winge online much but just a few interesting things happened today like to share.

Firstly I was flying near 5 in F4U, 15k alt and I spotted 3 low cons flying together towards v6. Anyhow, dive on the trailing con which turned out to be a spitty, was set up for the attack when the middle con's tag came up, was Temp. So I flew past the spit and killed the Temp, and low and behold, the next cons still chugging along oblivious to this and I killed him too.

Question: I virtually flew right over the spitty, flew another 1kd to kill temp, and another 500d to kill chog and the spitties chasing me like mad but does'nt give check 6???

WHY????

Other thing is, killed a f4u, no wing, spinning in the air falling, person who will remain nameless, fly's down right in front of me and pegs this poor guy all the way down and gets kill?

it's like that in order to be realistic. life is unfair and this fact is modeled into the game.

Zygote, I still dunno why some people call check 6 and other's don't. There may be a lot of newbies out there who just haven't a clue.

As far as the other guy shooting at your apparent kill I can only pose a few reasons.
1) He may in fact have had the kill set up before you came along and decided to get his shots in. I've had kills stolen from me that way where I'm on a guys 6 and another wingie swoops in with more 'e' and takes the kill after I've done all the work to set him up.

2) He may not have reasoned that the plane was in fact dead. I personally have passed up apparently "dead" airplanes not wanting to steal a kill only to have them come back and shoot at me!! I've finally come to the conclusion that if it hasn't hit the ground or exploded in mid-air it's still a threat.

3) Some people just are frustrated because they've been flamed a lot that tour and decide to take it out on a burning hunk-o-metal and shoot their wad at it.

4) Some people are looking for the assist and end up stealing the kill.

Just a few ideas, I'm not condoning any of them.

As one of those newbies, HOW DO YOU CALL 6? I've looked all over the place and can't find the command set.

I'm guessing that some people either don't know about the 6 call, don't know how to use it (like Charon), or don't have it mapped to a convineint joystick button or keyboard key and end up fumbling for it when the time comes to use it.

As for kill stealing, half of the fun of this game is shooting at things. I personally will pass up any plane that looks like it's going down after being pinged by another pilot, but it is one of the toughest things for me to do. Not because I want the kill message, but because I want to shoot it and see it explode! It'd be nice if there were some way of awarding the kill once an aircraft has been given back to gravity, so it would become a bit less taboo to blow the crap out of it on the way down. (ie: if you pluck off the right parts to make it impossible to land...not just a wingtip)

-edit- I almost forgot about you Charon! I think the key for Check Six has to be mapped manually. Just go into the Key Mapping setup off of the clipboard and assign it to whatever key you want!

i think the default key is the ' (apostrophe) key. I dunno, I have a button on the stick mapped to it in my saitek profile. I'm pretty sure it's mapped to the ' key. Funny, somewhere I printed out a 5 page list of commands/radio/view explanation. wonder where I got it from... *shrugs*

edit - found it on the downloads page, but it doesn't have the check 6 call on it. hmm... maybe the document should be updated...

Well, first off, when someone witnesses a guy engaging, with visible dots on the horizon, one assumes you have SA, before I ever engage, I always give a 360 look around for co-alt, or higher cons near me if I am to dive into a con. Now, OTOH,if you are on climb out, and cons appear anywhere behind your 9-3 clk, then a check six is valid.

Check six's are nice to have, but if you have to depend on them for your SA, then your SOL.

I find that about 75% of the time the Check 6 calls needlessly scare the S$it out of me, since my SA is pretty good from years of AW. The other 25% of the time pays for the rest

, so I'm always happy to get one and try to send a "thank you" whenever I can.

Great ccommunity BTW, very helpful and generally friendly. It looks like I'll be camping here for a while, even at $30/month. I used to pay more (a lot more some months) when I had less

I've got my Check 6 key mapped to " so I can hit it in a hurry. I fly with one hand on the keyboard for trimming, and that key is right next to my "look forward-down" key [; key]. If I see someone in a bad spot I'll instantly give a Check 6 call. Yesterday in H2H, and this morning, I probably gave a dozen or more Check 6 calls. It's force of habit for me to want to give the other friendly a warning.

For those who haven't figured it out yet:

Setup button > Key Mapping > General
Scroll down until you see "check 6", or something along those lines, and map it to a key. Preferably one that's in easy reach. I picked the quote key since I fly with one hand trimming the aircraft and it's close to my trim keys.

Ive had instances where my check 6 went to every body BUT the guy i wanted to send it to. Sometimes when there are a lot of planes around it can be easy to screw up and send it to the wrong person.
