Why DO AP shells explode in the trees?

Yes, most if not all have a charge of some sort of explosives. To the best of my knowledge, anyway.

HEAT use a larger explosive charge than those found in normal AP shells...

No we don't use HEAT.

Most WW2 era AP rounds did carry HE charges.

iv been labouring that the AP was akin to a 'ball' round as in a rifle

ok wait a sec.
this round is suposed to detonate INSIDE the GV!
i take it then that the fuse is not OVERLY sensitive as then it would detonate UPON striking the GV instead of being delayed until penetration had taken place, therefore once again,
how can passage thru a tree foliage trigger the fuse?
