Combat Trim no longer sustaines 1G
« on: April 30, 2010, 02:34:51 PM »
Combat trim keeps the plane straight and level, but it puts in a little too much elevator and raises the nose slowly. Currently it sustains about 1.2 Gs. This applies to all planes.

Unfortunately I can't remember which update caused this.

I may be wrong, but it was my understanding that was meant to approximate level flight for a given speed but was slightly less accurate than keeping the plane in trim manually and the fact that the nose rises or falls slightly reflects this.

I doubt it, it has always kept 1G before even in the vertical, the only thing different now is it is sustaining 1.2Gs instead.

Not much, but it gets annoying sometimes. Combat trim trims the plane to keep it level at MIL power and is tuned to for all ranges of speed limited only by the maximum trim deflection. As far as I know, it does not matter weather the nose is pointed up, down, or level, combat trim will keep it trimmed for 1G level flight. The problem now is, it's trimmed for 1.2Gs, thus raising the nose in level flight. Auto-level still works, but I'd rather not have to turn that on and off all the time.

It never trimmed it based on the G-levels. It's meant to be based off of tables that say "at this speed, trim this much deflection" -- and it's possible the trim is off.

After the WW1 a number of planes had their trim messed up (262 especially, if I recall?), and this may be one of those issues. Simply report the trim needs correcting and they should add it to the list, is my opinion.

Have you tried calibrating your joystick?

I checked my joystick, nothing wrong there.

It's meant to be based off of tables that say "at this speed, trim this much deflection" -- and it's possible the trim is off.
...

That's exactly what I'm saying. It use to be that trim is calibrated so that you're always in 1G flight when your stick is neutral. Take up any fighter plane with 25% fuel to show the difference. Go level and let go of the stick and watch the G meter and your nose. Right now it will sustain about 1.2Gs, pushing your nose up from level flight. CT has always kept the Gs constant for me no matter if my nose is pointed up or down. Go vertical and watch it hold 1.2Gs for as long as airspeed allows it to. Take a dive and watch your nose slowly try to return to level flight.

CT just needs to be adjusted slightly so that it holds 1G like it did before instead of 1.2Gs.

Cart and horse. It wasn't trimmed so that you were 1G. It was trimmed so that work loads were less. Coincidentally that means usually you'll be 1g on the accelerometer but that's not the direct end result. End result is your stick input vs what keeps you on the ball better.

All I know is what I know, and I know that before one of those updates CT kept the plane at 1G with no stick input, now CT keeps the plane at 1.2Gs with no stick input. I use to be able to let go of the stick and it would fly level, now it climbs slowly. It's not that complicated.

Ever since I started playing again a year and a half ago, CT has always pushed my nose up a bit when the stick was neutral. That is what got me to start manually trimming my planes for a period of a couple months, then I got lazy and put CT back on.
