iPhone is addictive!

Had an issue with my iPhone about 2 weeks ago. After about 30 minutes the iPod on it would skip, stop, and stutter. I thought oh no. So I ordered an MP3 player from Newegg. Which took about 2 weeks to get here. It was nothing fancy for sure. Then I lost my earphones (or so I thought). I ran by Wally World and grabbed some for $11. Took them to the gym and wala, the iPod ran flawlessly for 77 minutes, 32 minutes on the eliptical and 45 minutes on the treadmill. I thought wow that was it the cheap earphones Apple used was the problem. Ran great ever since.

Shortly thereafter the Mp3 player arrived. I couldn't figure the darn thing out. I thought I tapped the screen and nothing happened. Then I tapped it twice and nothing happened. Turns out you have to actually move knobs and dials. Uh, who'd a thunk it.

Today, after my twice a week 5.5 mile hike I felt a lump in my back pocket. I thought money! nope it was the bad earphones from Apple.

Apple seems to have a love for weak wiring endpoints. I haven't seen an iPod/iPhone charger yet that isn't fraying at the end connector. As far as I know, people use the headphones as a fashion item (as most of Apple's products tend to be) instead of for their quality.

Call me old fashioned, but I just want a damn phone. I don't want to text,take pics,video,or surf the web with it. I don't want bluetooth or easyedge. I don't need ghey ringtones, vibrations or a friggin' headset.

Certainly understandable. However, when I record a voice perfectly, take a photo that makes Kodak jealous, play music with such quality sound that it would make Mozart cry, and surf the net while talking on that same phone I can deal with the complications of the technology.

Just last Monday I was on the treadmill at the gym. My sister-in-law calls from her car. She wants to know if I'm at the computer. I say no, why? She said she was looking for the phone # of a business. My brother's truck was broken down and she had to pick him up so she was in a hurry. My brother is not patient. I said no problem. Looked up the address and phone number of the business over the internet using my iphone while talking to her. That is just awesome!

My father and I drove down to Phoenix this week and I spent quite a bit of time doing the same thing for food, gas, and lodging.

Yeah, I can see why those features would be cool to have. My wife insists on getting me a new phone tomorrow (that I'll be paying for)  , and everything she's showed me has all this extra stuff tacked on to the price. I really hate to shell out a wad of cash for something I don't think I'll use that often. My drinking buddies send me stupid pics and jokes non stop as it is. I'm afraid if I did get one of these fancy contraptions, it'd be bouncing, vibrating, ringing, singing and farting 24/7.   
But, I said the same thing about a computer too. And now I'm on this thing all the time. I hardly turn the TV on anymore.

uptown: my treo also has Garmin GPS (routing maps with speech prompts), a tidal table (global) great for fishing (and hunting with it's moon phases), a ballistics calculator with profiles for both my 22 and 243, SplashID - an app with lots of important info (passworded and heavily encrypted), and push email (blackberry style), plus an MP3 player. These are my most frequent apps, it stops me having to carry/charge 3 or 4 different devices.

...oh... and it's six years old.

Uptown, about 8 months ago I got me a Samsung Impression A877 which has a touchscreen and a fold out qwerty mini-keyboard.  It surfs the internet, email, text messages, music/video, video messages, 3MP Digital camera (which takes pretty good pictures!) and a battery that seems to last forever... oh yeah.. it does phone calls too.

Before I say more about it, let me tell you a bit about myself.  Before this, I hadn't had a cell phone in about 8 years.  I simply didn't need one.  I got this one because I was planning on moving soon and considering that I didn't know the future of my housing status (wife left me about a year prior) it would be easier to just get a Cell phone and not have to worry about disconnecting, transferring, and setting up a landline.  Cell phone technology just didn't interest me.

Anyways, back to the phone.  It cost me NOTHING to buy up front.  If I had to pay for the actual phone it I wouldn't have gotten this one.  Now don't get me wrong I know I ended up paying for it one way or another.  I had to agree to two years of service @ 27.99/month and three months of an unlimited data plan @ $40.  I also added unlimited texting for $10/month for the heck of it, so the first three months cost me about $83 with taxes and all.  After the three months were up, I ended up canceling the unlimited data and I dropped down to a reduced texting plan ($5/month for 200 texts), so my bill now is less than $40/month... and I have a cool little I-phone wannabe to play around with.  I paid $10 for a texas hold'em/sudoku game package so that gives me something to do when I'm waiting in line, etc...

I also found websites that let you download free apps (albeit lesser quality) that is kind of fun to play with.  I actually downloaded the original NES Zelda game for free!  I just don't see a need to actually 'PAY' for a phone upfront personally.. I don't care about the latest and greatest...

I dunno, work pays for my mobile plan. The Treo 650 is less than $100US these days. Most of the apps I use are free (even the GPS maps). The thing is you don't have to hate them for all the wanky whizzy stuff, you'll find there's good apps for real world non-teenager-type stuff
