Network problem, pulling my hair out now......
« on: October 01, 2001, 01:39:00 PM »
I have a generic 10mb network card and an ISDN card (internal).   Once upon a time both worked together perfectly fine, even had a 2nd PC using internet connection sharing........then one day the network card just stopped working.  Error message I get when double clicking network neighbourhood is "Unable to browse the network, this may be for a variety of reasons".....which isnt very helpful.

If I uninstall everything and remove the ISDN card from the system.....reinstall TCP/IP and the network card.....it works just fine.  As soon as I add the ISDN card again the network card stops working.  If I add the ISDN card to the system but cancel the auto hardware detect then guess what.....the network card continues to work fine.   If I install the ISDN card 1st and then the network card.....the ISDN card works fine and the network card doesnt.

I've tried 3 different network cards and 2 different ISDN terminal adapters.......it's the same every time.

At no time are any conflicts listed in hardware properties, no errors seen anywhere except the "unable to browse network" one.

WTF am I doing wrong?

This may be overly obvious, but the two cards are not sharing an IRQ are they?

Well...warning, I think sometimes certain software wont give you the correct IRQ readings...ie it lies.

Just a though. Maybe the card has taken a dump. If everything BUT the card works perhaps a component on the card fried.

I had wacky problems with a couple of cheap network cards.  Every time the solution was to toejamcan the net card and get another one.

However, what does Sysinfo tell you in terms of your IRQ distribution?  What slots are all of your cards in?

Well, the weird thing is the network cards I've tried (3 different ones) all work fine without the ISDN card in place......so I'm pretty sure there's no fault with the card.

Lepht,  good question, I'll let ya know soon as I get home from work.

P.S.  Ta for the help guys.

What else has changed? Have you tried shuffling PCI slots?

Have you tried seperating the two cards if they were next to each other (thinking of electro-magnetic interference)?

Have you tried a full reinstall of Windows? If you're near Aylesbury or Stanmore, let me know.

Yes, yes, yes & no.

I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware problem cos the network card works fine until I install the software for the ISDN card.....the ISDN card can be in the PC but not installed with no problem.

Also, I'm British but skipped the country to Holland 3 years ago......so no, I'm not really near Aylesbury.   ;)  But ta for the thought.
