Lots of folks get worked up over stuff. Last night we were getting horded at A44 but there were still some goof fights over the base. I'd trolled in from down the coast just under the clouds and engaged a high 38 then worked down into the furball. Dinged a few and got dinged back and got lit up by one 38 while dinging another. Breaks of the game let me land (mainly because the 38 shooting me saw enough fall off to figure I was toast). Cripple held up well enough to let me take the remaining 1/2 (just about literally) of the plane home and I got a wtg with tease from the 38 driver...with the comment he shouldn't have stopped shooting. All good fun....
Roll from the capped field and am heading "out to sea" for a few thousand feet before turning back and see a 51 screaming in on another plane (JUGler) climbing out like I am. I give him a check 6 and he lets me know its probably "X" and I ask if he wants me out...he does. In the end "X" kills him using the verts and ropes and so I roll in on the still fast pony (350 or so on deck) and get him turning before he can bug out. 2-3 moves and he gets lit up and of course you get the 200 "@#$#".
So its perfectly fine to come on in with alt, E and numbers and be joe ace but the fact that you use all that advantage to kill a single con and ignore another threat in icon range before you even engage isn't your fault. You then let that other con herd you like a sheep and moan about it after you roll over and give up your belly (literally in this case). Now immediately after pony ace had another good stick roll in on me in his 47M and we had a great fight. I happened to work a reasonable vertical two circle and got it to a point where he was in tight and I snuck thru his shot window...which left us falling back into each other on the "split-s" recovery. I popped off a few rounds as he fell back into me. I took a collision he didn't but I was still flying and I got lucky in that my continued recovery was in line with his fall....this left me just enough E to catch an 800 yd snap shot on his vertical that set him on fire. All in all probably a 1 in 10 chance (at best) that I win that fight vs that particular pilot. Yet all I got back was a GK, a <S> and some friendly banter.
I've reached a point I realize that we have a few different schools of thought. We've got a subset that enjoys the fight on the terms presented. These guys realize that sometimes your the bat and others the ball and they deal with circumstance. Others are "attack aces" and it shows. We all have times were we have an initial advantage, great the guys "ack hugging"....well fly away and let him come up to you....or attack him in his ack...those are your options. You've got 2 cons, ignore the higher "lesser" plane to attack the "greater" threat or don't...but don't whine when the plane you ignored then rolls in on you after the 1st fight is done. Now I'd have gladly flushed him off JUGler had he wanted. This was no even fight just a guy with smash and numbers....
Didn't mean to hijack your thread but the bottom line is simple, fly the fight that works for you kill em if you can and let em whine. The caveat is simple, if you come across a 1 v 1 either stay out or ask before "saving" the guy in green.
