The first thing I would suggest is to get your system running as efficiently as possible. Skuzzy wrote a forum post called "Hints and Tips"--read that, and follow his recommendations. Another resource is the Black Viper website at
www.blackviper.com ;he's got some really good recommendations on how to get Windows as lean as possible. My rig is 5 years old, and through some draconian process management, I keep my processes very low, and maximize what's going on in-game. If you follow Skuzzy's suggestions, you will see a conspicuous change in performance, unless your rig is already pretty lean.
