patrol boats
« on: May 07, 2010, 12:28:32 AM »
How about adding the German E-boats or the British Vosper(i think thats who made them) in addition to the PT boats.

Aw c'mon guys, Quit dinkin around!
This is the REAL DEAL!  Don't go 1/2 way..  If they let us spawn the Fletcher DD's (already in game) would work great!
But IMO, a different type, would be better, so you could tell spawn DD from fleet drone DD's...

Buchanan class DD, USS Laffee...

Japanese special type DD, IJN Asashio...

Of course you know I want spawnable DD's.  There's a thread around here somewhere (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,267254.0.html).

The naval part of the game is seriously under-developed IMO.  A lot more could be done with it.

Sure they did, lol! :lol  For any number of reasons..  Do you think that when a DD is reassigned from one battle area to another, that they sent a whole fleet to escort it? :huh  Or when used to make supply runs to small isolated units.. Or damaged, mechanical difficulties, end of tour, and returning to port.. Or heading out to join the fleet, after a port call for R&R.. Do you think the whole task group will just cruise back, just to pick them up, lol? :huh     NO, they were running around the ocean SOLO!

radar pickets sometimes ran solo, other times with destroyer escorts

But not into combat.

Probably not alone if damaged either.

Sure, solo running supplies, but that's not the intent here, is it?

The British "Castle" class corvettes escort ships would be a good ship to add into the game.  It would be a PT boat on steroids, with more armor, more firepower (minus the torps), and less speed.  IIRC, a few of the USN Castle class corvettes had single 5in gun turret up typical of a destroyer.

**from wikipedia**

"Castle Class Corvette"
Displacement:    1,060 long tons (1,077 t)
Length:    252 ft (77 m)
Beam:    37 ft (11 m)
Draught:    10 ft (3.0 m)
Installed power:    2,750 hp (2.05 MW)
Propulsion:    2 × water-tube boilers
1 × 4-cylinder triple-expansion steam engine
Single screw
Speed:    16.5 knots (30.6 km/h; 19.0 mph)
Range:    9,500 nmi (17,600 km) at 10 kn (19 km/h; 12 mph)
Complement:    112
Sensors and
processing systems:    • Type 272 radar
• Type 144Q sonar
• Type 147B sonar
Armament:    • 1 × 4-inch Quick Firing Mk.XIX High Angle/Low Angle combined air/surface gun
• 1 × Squid anti-submarine mortar
• 1 × depth charge rail, 15 depth charges
• 2 × 20 mm twin anti-aircraft cannon
• 6 × 20 mm single anti-aircraft cannon

Or... if the Castle class corvette seems too powerful for personal use, then perhaps the lessor Flower class corvette:

**from wikipedi"a**

"Flower Class Corvette" (modified/upgraded)
Displacement:    1,015 long tons (1,031 t; 1,137 ST)
Length:    208 feet (63.40 m)o/a
Beam:    33 feet (10.06 m)
Draught:    11 feet (3.35 m)
Propulsion:

    * single shaft
    * 2 × water tube boilers
    * 1 × 4-cycle triple-expansion reciprocating steam engine
    * 2,750 ihp (2,050 kW)

Speed:    16 knots (29.6 km/h)
Range:    3,500 nautical miles (6,482 km) at 12 knots (22.2 km/h)
Complement:    90
Sensors and
processing systems:

    * 1 × Type 271 SW2C radar
    * 1 × Type 144 sonar

Armament:

    * 1 × 4 inch BL Mk.IX single gun
    * 1 × 2 Pdr. Mk.VIII single "pom-pom" AA gun
    * 2 × 20 mm Oerlikon single
    * 1 × Hedgehog A/S mortar
    * 4 × Mk.II depth charge throwers
    * 2 depth charge rails with 70 depth charges

They would be a fun addition to the game, but I'm not sure how they would be implemented.
