E6B For boo-boo's
« on: May 10, 2010, 09:04:58 PM »
Oh no... im making this part of the forum my home.. HOWEVER, I have another noobish idea for all of you ladies to plunder, how about an E6B that can tell you how much time you have if... say... you get your engine oil smacked out? :) a noob toy, maybe, a Billy Mays commercial, maybe, a Brilliant Idea... possibly  :rock

Lemme know what you guys think, just a thought, dont kill me  :bolt:

The E6B in the game approximates in a dumbed-down way what the actual E6B mechanical computer's function was during WW2. I think it does just fine.

Just watch the oil pressure gauge.  When it hits zero start flapping your arms.  :aok

The fact of the matter is there are varied rates in how fast oil leaks from an engine.  A person could make an edjukated guess that due to differences in the severity of the damage and/or where the damage occurred, oil could and should leak out differently.

While I've not ever timed just how quickly certain engines seize, I can tell a P47x will far outlast a 109x and a whole host of other planes.  Likewise, a radiator hit in a Typhoon or Tempest will cripple them faster than almost any other aircraft with the same type of damage.

As has been said...check your gauges ( I find it easier than bringing up the clipboard)....rad hit watch the temp gauge. Oil hit watch the oil gauge...all have them and all work...It took me some time to use the gauges and never thought I would but now I use them all the time..there are still a couple that I don't have the foggiest idea about but I'm sure I will in time use these also.

E6B only tells you what you already know. You already have instruments that tell you everything on there, and it computes the rest (using fuel to tell how much longer you have to run engine at X settings, and times speed at Y mph, gives you Z duration, etc).

There's no "loss of oil" meter or anything. There's no way a pilot has to know how long the gas will drain from a tank or the oil from his engine before it's gone.

I'd rather it NOT tell how much oil time you have left. Already too many folks say "screw this, I'm going to keep dogfighting" and that would only give them reason to say "Fine, I have 1 minute left to fly, I'll dogfight for 59 seconds then bail"....

I think it'd set a bad precedent, personally.

Just a note oil hit on il2 will kill engine in about 30 seconds, no other plane can beat that.

You do know there is a randomization factor, right?

When you get hit in the gas tank or in the oil pan, you can drain at a high rate or a low rate. Meaning sometimes your oil can be gone in 10 seconds, sometimes 40 seconds. It's randomly generated, because not all leaks are the same size, and don't all drain the same rate. Same for gas leaks. I've had some that drained an entire wing tanks in a P-39 in mere seconds, and some that let me RTB and land safely just before it emptied out.

Sorry, was aimed more at gun's reply. Maybe his il2 lasted 30 seconds a time or two, but it won't always depending on this randomization.

This probably wouldn't work for 2 or 4 engine planes, jus' sayin'  ;)
