Schweinfurt was very interesting. I was stationed there in 2000. The old timers say when they came to bomb the Faag ball bearing industry they would flood the city to throw off the terrain view from the  bombers.

Thats pretty clever, probably burn less when flooded. Keeps the dust down too... :lol

A couple of excerpts about the Schweinfurt raid from a book I bought: The Ragged Irregulars of Bassingbourn

"The 91st Bomb Group had twenty-four B-17's airborne after 1100 hours. Eighteen aircraft made up the 91st formation and an additional six aircraft were flying with the 101st Composite Group. Weather was good at Bassingbourn when the bombers got underway but as they crossed over onto the Continent they picked up a cloud base above them ranging from 17,000 to 21,000 feet. Rather than have the Task Force climb up through the overcast, Colonel Gross chose to have the formation remain below the clouds, which showed the Fortresses up beautifully and made them easily visible for fifty miles. The clouds also provided cover for the Luftwaffe attacks which would commence shortly."

"Fighter attacks began over Antwerp, Belgium. There was to have been fighter escort up to this point but the 4th Fighter Group failed to make the rendezvous. It was later determined that the Thunderebolts were looking for their charges up high and the bombers were down below the cloud cover."

Looking forward to an intense firefight.

It is going to be a real blast to fly in this event! You do not want to miss this one!

The allied bombers will need solid team work and discipline to make it through the axis defenders. The same goes for the axis too, since they will be heavily outnumbered. The side split is 70/30 in favor of the allied bombers, who will be flying unescorted.

That means that with 100 players, we will have 30 axis interceptor pilots flying against 70 bomber pilots who with formations total out 210 bombers. That is a serious challenge for both sides  :aok

Idiot question, since I rarely get in on this stuff: How will the leader position(s) be organized for the allies? Currently in the MA, I head up the 91st.

Dhyran from the Loose Deuce squad has volunteered to be the allied CO in the whole three frames of this SEC event. If you are interested in leading a bomber unit in frame 2, please contact dhyran.

Currently the axis do not have a dedicated CO. If anyone is interested in that position, please contact me. The axis fighter pilots would greatly benefit from a skilled leader coordinating their attacks.

Frame 2 will be played on the 16th May (next sunday) 3PM EST and in the Special Events Arena 2. Everybody are welcome!

Here are some comments from the participants a year ago when this setup and frame was last played:

Quote
One of the most intense so far IMO.

Quote
I will have to say that was one of the best bomber type raids i have been on.

Quote
This was a great frame!
I was amazed at the group formation and communications that we had in Brooke's group.  Those poor Krauts didn't stand a chance against us!  Was like being in the move "12 o'clock high"!

Quote
I had a very action packed frame, one of the funnest bombing missions I've flown in a long time too.

Check out the thread from here, there are some nice pictures there too!
