Ohio U. campus party fire
« on: May 12, 2010, 01:32:07 PM »
I always wonder why law enforcement does not use hi-rez video from a distance to try and identify drunk college students doing stupid crap light lighting fires or flipping cars during parties/riots.

It appears now that the Ohio University Police department has started using plain clothes officers or informants to infiltrate groups of drunk idiots lighting couches on fire in the streets of campus.  The photo evidence has been posted online.  This sounds like a pretty good deterrent to me.  We will have to wait and see if it works.

Sounds to me like the Police were acting as provocateurs instead of fighting crime. Instead of allowing them to burn the mattress, why not just infiltrate and arrest? They were inches away from handcuffing them or calling in support.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Provocateurs???  LOL!!!

A plain clothed LEO would get raped if he/she tried to do anything in that crowd other than take pictures.

Ohio UPD: using 21st century, but aparently still stuck with a 1950s training manual.  If they send in informants or undercovers into a situation that they know will need to be dispersed for public safety (IE: the situation is ripe for something dangerous or illegal), and then wait and don't do anything until after crimes have been commited, it's entrapment.  Not only that but then posting the video publicly... I hope they omited the identities of the offenders or the UPD could be facing civil repricutions to the young idiots.

Yea, but cases that i have seen at Ohio State University when the crowed is far to large to handle, UPD just stands back and call for city PD help.  Not sure how big the crowed was at OU, but they did the right thing by taking pic of the individuals.

True, there are likely lefitimate reasons why the UPD didn't get involved sooner than later.  One being calling for backup, another might be maybe they had permits to assemble and weren't breaking any laws until the troches were lit.  Whatever the case is, the key thing about the video footage is that it's proof for the Dean to review and decide who to send home, so either convicted or not in the end the troublemakers get removed.

Yep, that is unfortunately that it happens when you drink and get stupid.  I bet some of them are not even 21, that is if they where drinking.

I have been to a party that had idiots, and no it sucks when they ruin all the fun by starting a fight.  Unfortunately, i was targeted by three a-holes.  Fortunately i  was on the track team and i had a few people on the team that surrounded them.  :t

An under cover LEO does not blow their gig to make an arrest or enforce the law unless someone's immediate safety and more so their life is in danger.  If the LEO has been able to pass as a college student, I'm willing to bet that there are much bigger fish to catch on campus than a few couch killers.  Such as drug dealers, thieves, rapists, etc.

You (and many others in this world) are making a lot of assumptions when you've not ever walked in the shoes of an LEO, are familiar with the laws, or know the department's SOG.  It is little different than being an armchair general to soldiers in the field.  Hold fast your tongue and remember that you simply do not know except what a few pictures show.   ;)
