Simple. Model the texture to show it only on your aircraft, not the other jets in game. On another note, when would you ever see "hundreds" of jets buzzing around you in the MAs? Youll rarely see more than 4 in a sector on most days. A graphical implementation wouldnt be so far fetched as you might think.

Not so much the 'hundreds' of jets in the MA's as it is a comparison of AH's massive multiplayerisming vs. IL-2's maybe you can get 15 people in a hosted room.

Only when the afterburner is engaged, and then only (really) at night.  You can see a burner in daylight but you have to look for it (unless you're looking at the tail end, which is good if you're flying and bad if you're on the ground).

The back end of a jet engine looks suspiciously like a black hole most of the time.

All of which is moot; the Jumo wasn't augmented.

By the way, smoke is also bad; the J59 had far too much of it, as did the TF-30.  The good news with the -30 is if it was smoking it was probably working.  In the immortal words of Joe if it says Prat & Whitney on the engines it better say Martin Baker on the seats...

     The F4s I worked had "low smoke" J79s...I'd hate to think what the "high smoke" ones looked like. 
In fact it was kind of cool watching the birds at the end of the runway.   When the smoke disappeared, you
got ready for the burners and the start of the rollout.
