WISP do they all suck, or just mine?
« on: May 13, 2010, 03:37:17 AM »
OK, so I live out in the boonies.  No cable, no DSL, only internet options here are dial-up, satellite or Wireless ISP.  Currently I am on a WISP setup with a guy from the closest town.  He has an antennae on his roof and provides cheap WISP to at least a dozen or more folks out here in the boonies like me, it's just a side business for him, and I doubt he's even incorporated.

Lately my connection is getting worse and worse, it's to the point now where more often the not the game is unplayable.  I'm talking about ping going anywhere from 150-1500 and variance all over the place.  The variance line in the game will literally bounce back and forth between flat lining on -1 and +1, or else just sawtooth all over the place.   Once in a blue moon I will get a steady 150-200 ping connection with no variance, but that is rare now.  When it's bad Pingplotter usually show very high PL% like 60-100% on  most hops and ping around 500-1000.  Even when my connection is "good" it still show 100% PL on 2-3 hops and ping around 150-200.

My theory is (and I may be wrong because I don't understand much networks) that he is servicing more clients with that little 10ft antenna on his roof then he has the bandwith to handle now.  Because when I'm up in the middle of the night, like right now, It's usually better then it is during daytime, and it's especially bad during evening hours.  Unfortunately evening hours  is when I want to play AH.

There is only one other WISP for this area called Digis.  I'm reluctant to try them though because they are 5 time more $$, way to much I feel.  Also most of the reviews I've found for them are pretty negative on their reliability and service, they advertise 7mbps service, but I've found reviews that say that is simply not true.  Anybody out there heard of Digis?  Know anything about them?  Are all WISP slow and unreliable?

So my question is;  Is there any other options for me?  Satellite is pretty expensive too, and I've heard it is slow and unreliable as well, and I can't think of any other options.

Is there anything I can do to stabilize my connection?  I kinda doubt it since like I said I'm pretty sure it's nothing wrong on my end.

For the game, dial-up would probably be the best of the lot you mentioned.  Satellite has horrific latency issues.  Wireless is always going to have significantly higher bit errors than a land line will.

One thing though.  There could be multiple culprits going on here.  The "Variance" line is indicating the CPU is being taken away from running the game.  Now this could be due to excessive packet retries on the network connection, or it could be something firing off in the background of your computer.  It is worth exploring before you start monkeying around with the type of Internet connection.

If it is something eating at your CPU time, switching ISP's is not going to help.
