Still in progress, but this is the scan after my initial day's work.  Any constructive criticism is accepted and appreciated. 

 

I'll scan and post more as I get it closer to being finished.

...but  here are some remarks:

When comparing both pics (your drawing and the photo), I was wondering if the right eye plus eye brown might to high or the left to low. #1

could it be, the the tip of the nose in relation to the chin is a little bit out of line ? #2

I think you may be right about the nose and chin, I can fix that with some shading and an eraser though.  I think the eyes are right though, at that angle you can't use a straight line.  That only works for looking straight into the face.  The nose is sort of a center point right there and both eyes are at an angle to it from that particular perspective.

I'll look at fixing that nose/chin bit this week though.  I've been working on the hands and ear mostly lately.  It's  just a matter of picking away at it to get it right really.  Thanks for the input, I appreciate it!

if ya really want it as perfect as you can get, use a grid to lay over the drawing then draw a grid on paper and then just draw what is in each square, the reason I say this is because there are too many things off on your sketch, none of it is Right, it's close but its just not perfect and when you are doing a portrait it demands perfection, when I say that I am referring to the distance's say from the nose to mouth and what not, every thing has to be on, a slightly longer nose or wider mouth can drastically change the over all appearance.

Yeah, I just can't bring myself to use the grid though, using the grid feel like cheating to me.  I'd really rather just rely on my hand and eye, even if it's not perfect.   Like I say, I'll keep picking away at things that I spot and it'll get there.  That kind of thing is why it takes me so long to finish a drawing,  I just keep picking at it until I'm satisfied.  I agree with you though about a lot of things just not being quite Right.  It needs work for sure.  Feedback like this is why I scanned and posted it.

you are young?  when I was 18 (I am now 40) I met  a guy that was the most incredible artist I have ever met up to that point and ever since then, this guy was amazing so I got the privilege of watching him put the pencil to paper, he started out by laying down a grid...lol I laughed at him, said he was cheating ( no lie).

I started using the grid many years after I met him cuz I could never quite get it perfect, It helped me perfect my art even more. I would have progressed at a much faster pace if instead of laughing at him, I took his advice.

Not saying you laughed at me,  what I am saying is if you want to be the best you can be, don't shirk at something that will save you years of practice.

you are young?  when I was 18 (I am now 40) I met  a guy that was the most incredible artist I have ever met up to that point and ever since then, this guy was amazing so I got the privilege of watching him put the pencil to paper, he started out by laying down a grid...lol I laughed at him, said he was cheating ( no lie).

I started using the grid many years after I met him cuz I could never quite get it perfect, It helped me perfect my art even more. I would have progressed at a much faster pace if instead of laughing at him, I took his advice.

Not saying you laughed at me,  what I am saying is if you want to be the best you can be, don't shirk at something that will save you years of practice.

I'm 36.  Nope, I'm not laughing at you at all man.  I just never have felt good about the grid, since I first learned about it.  I understand that it's a tool in a lot of ways, I'm just not that into using it.  Perhaps I'm hamstringing myself in that way.  I've seen some of the work that you posted here, and it's good.  I don't feel like you've cheated on any of that stuff at all either.  I  just would feel guilty using it, couldn't even really tell you why, just a feeling I have.  Even though I'm a perfectionist, I don't mind some imperfection here and there.  Not that I don't strive towards perfection, I just accepted that it can't exist.    Usually if I keep picking away I can get awfully close.  

Perhaps I should take some time and reconsider my feelings on that however.

you are hamstringing yourself, open that mind of yours and imagine what you could do, you get that grid going and I bet you will progress so fast that you will surprise your self, You said it yourself it is a tool, use it bro especially if you are a perfectionist

Pinky on the left side of the drawing looks like it could be extended up a smidge, kindof over the collar.

You've got a deal man.  I work as a dental tech, so I do quite a lot of carving every day, I just do it with instruments on porcelain is all.
