BF 109 aileron & radiator flap 'Droop'
« on: May 20, 2010, 06:28:21 PM »
I have read from many sources that the 109s had their ailerons and radiator vents 'droop' when flaps were deployed to increase lift. I noticed that in AH, the ailerons did not droop when I dropped flaps (from inside the cockpit, I could not see if the radiator vents drooped). Is the added lift from this modeled in AH?

Also, I have read that the 109s had two radiators with a cut off system so that if one got hit, the coolant would not all drain out. I know that although the model shows two radiators, the cut-off system is not modeled in AH, but is there any chance of this getting modeled?

Thanks

Double radiator Spitfires had the same cutoff, but it isn't modeled in AH at this time.

The N1K2-J's automatic combat flaps are also not modeled.

Sorry to get a little OT here but I thought the N1K's automatic flap system was modeled into the FM but wasn't represented graphically on the 3D model?

It doesn't behave thus and I've never seen any HTC staff say that.

Try this, take an N1K2, turn tight and lower a notch of flaps, you turn tighter.  If the auto combat flaps were modeled the first notch would already be down.  Also, being automatic and not based on anything other than angle of attack, they should come down at speeds AH doesn't allow the flaps to be lowered.

On the 109E series (and I suspect later models as well) the ailerons dropped only 5 degrees when the flaps were fully deployed. They did not act as extra flaps, it was simply to stave off stalls that would disrupt control of the aircraft during the vital landing process. The end results (the handling during stall) may already be modeled in AH, even if the tiny 5-degree droop isn't graphically represented.

Any test data that used full flaps would automatically contain this, so when HTC modeled the plane off those specs you have the end result. In other words, it's probably already part of the flight model and you just don't notice it.

EDIT: P.S. The 109 radiators do drop with the flaps. Otherwise you'd notice part of the trailing edge of your wing wasn't dropping from the cockpit. Try it offline in F3 view while parked on the runway. Zoom in close.
