PCI vs AGP graphics cards
« on: November 27, 2000, 06:58:00 AM »
Hi there.

I djust changed jobs and  i recived an new compaq pIII 750mhz computer from then. I was all happy when i was gonna install my old TNT 2 Ultra AGP graphics card in it, but to my amazement Compaq had choosen to not put an AGP slot in this BRAND NEW compaq computer. Why i do not know...

The thing is, now i have to go out an brand new PCI graphics card. The one i have looked at is the Voodoo 5 PCI card.

The question is, is this the _best_ PCI slot based card i can get?

Regards.

I'd say it is the best for playing AH.  I don't know if there are any PCI GeForce 2's available, but I'd pick the V5 anyway.  It won't turn as high framerates, but the Full Scene Anti Aliasing is beautifull and fast enough.

I'd get the V5 PCI.

BTW, that Compaq machine likely has a built-in AGP adapter right?  You can only have one AGP slot, so if there is a built-on AGP video chipset there normally is not an AGP slot.  It sucks.  I love Compaq servers, but their desktops and laptops send me screaming into the night.

About the only thing worse than a Compaq is a Packard Bell. Both I and my two brothers owned them, but only because I didn't have time to warn them when they bought theirs.

After that I never buy computers, I buy parts  .

There's also the GeForce2 MX PCI: http://www.inno3d.com/Gf2MX/intro.htm

Should be about $40 cheaper than the Voodoo5 (~$135)... dunno how they compare though.

LOL towd...disgruntled employeee :-)

I agree.  Compaq desktops are crap...anything that does not let you upgrade with what you want should be compacted into sand.

I have a laptop and so-far it has done well by me.  But then again, when was the last time anybody upgraded a laptop.  The rule is, buy a laptop for what you need and if it does more than what you intended in the first place...consider yourself lucky.

3DFX just dropped the V5's price by $50.

The V5 5500 PCI is the hands-down winner for your needs IMHO.

BTW, the GF2's have higher frame rates, but the V5 has better image quality and better Full Scene Anti-Aliasing.  I wouldn't give up my V5, and wouldn't trade it for the best Gee Force 2 they make.

You guys are missing the point. His COMPANY gave him the machine.  Most companies buy business model PC's which do not come equiped with agp slots as musiness for most part do not need them. This is true for all manufactures, not just compaq.
