Hello All! Some questions for this new guy
« on: May 25, 2010, 09:57:53 AM »
Hey Everyone.  I am thinking about signing up for this game.  I used to belong to a squadron in IL2 Sturmovic 1942.  I flew an SBD in the Japanese theater.  We would take off from the carrier, meet the Japanese and fight.  The enemy were AI's.  I used to have the protection of the wildcats while flying toward my objective, then release my bombs either on ships or land based targets. Sometimes one of the guys would fly as my rear gunner.  After we completed our mission, if we completed it, we would fly back to the carrier and land.  If you crashed, all your kills were voided.  This made me very nervous...LOL

All the aircraft had true flight characteristics for that type of aircraft.

My question is, how is the combat and realism in this game?  Are there real people on the ground and air shooting at me or AI?

Thanks all.

There are only two types of aircraft — fighters and targets

When you fly online yes you are fighting against real people and there is no AI.

I would also point out that the Flight Model is head and shoulders better than IL2.

2-week trial is free.

Welcome to your new addiction.

Welcome outofctrl,

To answer your questions, the combat and realism in this game is pretty good (what else would you expect to be said at the BBS of the game you are asking? hehe). HiTech tries to model all of the aircraft in game as accurately to their original, wartime, performance as he can find accurate sources for. There are definitely different feelings between the aircraft in IL2 and AH. Some are less forgiving, some more.
Yes, there are real people on the ground and the air shooting at you, but there are also some AI. When you get near a carrier task force, or near an airfield or strategic targets, usually you will find Anti-Air firing at you automatically. There is the ability to man some of those guns as well, so you may run into a mix of manual and automated AI gunnery defense.

Here in Aces High, your kills are not voided due to a crash. HOWEVER, there is a scoring system which IS affected, as well as a perk system. The perk system is kind of like AH's "money". There are a few very powerful aircraft that have a cost associated (such as the ME-262). When you kill another aircraft, you earn perks. If you land on the runway, you get to keep 100% of what you earn. If you land 2 or more kills in a single flight, a message pops up that everyone can see stating "Outfctrl has landed X kills as a member of ?? squadron".

Hope that helps answer a couple of questions. There is a free 2 week trial available, and I HIGHLY recommend getting in touch with the trainers. They can be excellent sources of information on not only how to fly, but other info on how the game runs.

You can also download the game for free and play OFFLINE for as long as you need to get comfortable with it.  There are also offline missions you can download and fly against AI planes.  Once you go online (no credit card or other payment information required), your two-week clock starts ticking.  You can do anything online for that free trial period, but I recommend getting the basics down offline so you can maximize your online trial period.

When you fly online the following are human-controlled:
>Planes (all)
>Ground Vehicles including PT boats (All except the truck convoys/barges/trains)
>Certain gun positions on Carriers, Air-fields or V-bases (Manned guns are 37mm on anything but a Carrier where you can get anything from single 20mm to quad 40mm to 5" Puffy).

AI controls:
>Auto ack: This includes: The large amount of small caliber round fired at once when flying near an Air-field.  The 2 guns on far edges of a V-base firing.  The large amount of varying sized Ack firing at you from a CV, this includes Puffy ack if you are above 3,000ft.
> As a tip: Auto ack guns fire in bursts of 4 rounds (fire-fire-fire-fire......fire-fire-fire-fire....etc.), and manned guns will fire 1 bullet at a time (unless it's a Carrier's quad gun).

As for realism: The Main arenas tend to not have realistic fights (P-51d vs Spit16, P-38 vs B-24, etc.) but the flight models are top-notch.  You will find some realistic fights at times though.  For a true realism arena (F6F-5's vs A6M5b's, etc) you will want to look at the AvA (Axis vs Allies) arena.  There are also Snapshots (Wednesday nights), Friday Night Squadron Operations and Scenarios that are historically accurate fights.

Since FA is calling it quits, lots of players from Fighter Ace coming over to AH and asking lots of good questions that should also help you out.

Welcome to AH. You will find there are a large number of people here who have tried IL2 and all of them will tell you the same thing, "true flight characteristics" doesn't exist in IL2. When you jump online in here, you are flying some of the best researched, tested and programmed flight models in online combat flight sims against live people from around the world. It's not perfect, but compared to others, it's head and shoulders above what you can get off a retail store shelf.

There are some auto/drone things that will fire at you without anyone manning them.

Thanks all for the great answers!  I will download tonight.
I mostly flew the SBD, but once in awhile I flew the Wildcat.  Another was the B25.  Very easy to takeoff and land.  I have a TrackIR too, which really helps in my flying and identifying targets.
The SBD was my main aircraft with my squadron.  We had fighters and bombers.  I was in the bomber squadron.

You probably have teamspeak or ventrilo but there is built in voice comms with AH too. For anyone within icon viewing distance, using F12 will give you 4 seconds to say something before you have to re-key. Make sure you mic is configured in Windows control panel before you jump into Ah.

You might want to read through this too:

Practice off-line at first to get every thing set up, and to get a feel of the flight model.  Your two week free trial period doesn't start until you go online.
