Im giving a museum a facelift!
« on: May 25, 2010, 07:09:39 PM »
Well as a requirement for graduation, Im required to do a "senior project". I had two options for this senior project, option A) being a job shadow or option B) being 60hrs of community service. For option A i would have wanted to shadow an airline pilot but i didnt know of any, so i chose B. Now i had to think up of a way that i could envolve aviation into Community Service and this is what i came up with and was approved for. Since i was a member already of Air Heritage Inc. which is a aviation museum and restoration facillity, i decided i would do somthing for them.

A lot of the members there are in their 60's or older. One guy who is very active flew P-47D's in WWII and gets around by a mobile seat/wheelchair. Another member just recently celebrated his 93rd birthday. There are two older ladies who also normally do the flower beds that are in front of the hangar.

Gardening is a Hobby of mine. Ive lived in the country all my life so i grew up having good landscapes around me especially at my grandma's who was my neighbor and where i spent almost all of my summers living at. So taking pride in a nice lawn got stuck into me. I had brought up the idea to the members of me redoing completely their front landscaping back at the march monthly members meeting and they all liked the idea. So April came and i went back to the board meeting this time and formally submitted my master plan for the redo. The object in mind was to make it as upkeep friendly as possibly while making it extremely nice. The board talked about it and the only thing holding it back was the funding. They thought it was just too expensive and that they didnt believe the members would want the 3000 dollars it would take to do all of it to go torwards this instead of the planes. So i went back to redo the plans but keeping it very simular.

I was able to adjust things and have gotten it down to about 1200 dollars. I went back to the May Board Meeting and the majority wasnt there, however in their By-laws they were able to approve it and give funding for the amount of 1000 dollars. The other 200 dollars, which has now turned into around 500 dollars will be coming straight from me and my family along with a few fundraisers and donations from businesses and other people. I myself will be putting about 200 dollars that i have made mowing grass towards it.

So here finally is the plan.

*all new plants except for exsist Hostas and Bulbs which will be removed and replanted elsewhere.
*6in high retaining walls using 12in long tan landscaping brick from homedepot to seperate the beds from the parking lot.
*all new topsoil and dark brown mulch on top

the actual plan itself

currently how it looked before i even touched it in march. As you see there are patches of daffadil bulbs and inbetween each patch is where the Hostas came up. That was pretty much all they have besides weeds and its the same for the whole length of the hangar

(these are to the right of the main entrance)

(looking down from a small hillside)

as you can see it wasnt maintained very well but, the bulbs are done blooming, the hostas have finally completely come up and the brick was bought and delivered by my dad and me saturday. luckily the homedepot is on the other side of the street not even a mile up the road so was a relatively easy job getting it there...

Hopefully, either Wednesday or thursday ill be able to go over and get the bulbs out since their done for the summer and hostas which are big enough to be taken out so i can spray the whole thing down with weed killer. Then either Saturday or Sunday i can actually start preparing them to put the bricks in.

I did a project like this at my house so the brick part should be pretty easy to do. Im hoping to get them planted and mulched by Memorial Day or within the first two weeks of June for the Summer guests.

A little about Air Hertiage. They started back in the 80's when the B-17 nine-O-nine crashed at the airport during an airshow. They restored it back to flying condition after a few years of being at the airport. In the early 90's the group formally was launched. We operate one of only a handful C-123K's in the mainland US (a couple are used in Alaska by a private owner for use in his diamond mines), 1 OV-1D Mohawk (use to have two but sold one in 2007) and a L-21. We currently have a T-28 Trojan that is around 80% restored to flight condition along with a Fairchild 24D which only 10 were ever made which just had its engine hung and is nearing the end of its restoration. We also have a T-34 and 1946 Funk which are in the early stages of restoration. For Static Displays, last year we received a F-15A from Georgia and a T-3 from a member who donated it. We are located at the main entrance to the  Beaver County Airport (KBVI) which is 18nm north of Pittsburgh Intl Airport by plane or 35miles north of Downtown Pittsburgh by car.

I will update this post as i go along. Since Finals are tomarrow and Thursday, ill be able to spend some actual time torwards it in the next few weeks.

well ive gotten the number 1 bed cleaned out. tomarrow, im gonna go over hopefully and till it and then start putting brick in. I think it will be easier to do them one bed at a time than all three at once.

Looks good. Remember, if it was poorly maintained before. it probobly will be poorly maintained after. Which is fine for most of the stuff you have there.
The arborvitae shouldnt be a problem for 20 years or so. I have two right next to my house that are 20 and almost 30 Ft tall that I would just LOVE to get rid of but cant as one is right next to my power line and paying someone else to do it is at the moment cost prohibitive (almost $1K to remove the pair)

The problem with these plants like the problem with alot of shrubs that can grow to a large size. Is people tend to plant them entirely too close to the house/building for instant gratification and then not trim or maintain them at which point they become both problematic from both a building maintenance and structural standpoint and unsightly. At which point they have to be removed because after you trim them they end up looking like a nekked bare stick. LOL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The butterfly bush. Love em personally hand have a couple myself.
Butterfly bushes grow like forsythia. Another nice bush.

Like forsythia, if your looking to fill in an area rather quickly. The nice thing is they grow like weeds.
Problem is, From a maintenance stand point... they grow like weeds.
After the first year of planting. If you dont stay on top of them and trim them way down at the end of the year. They can become VERY big VERY quickly.
Very pretty plant though. And they do attract butterflies in the late summer when they bloom.

Looks like it should look great though
Im surprised not to see any azalea or Creeping Phlox

its funny you bring azaleas up as i was just thinking about putting them in somewhere. We just bought a couple for my house and i sort of like them.

and i love the BF bush as well. We had one one year and it just took off. We even had some humming birds stop by to it which was cool to see. It didnt make it through the winter though. We didnt cover it so i dont know if that was the problem or not.

the arborvitae is a dwrarf one so it should only get around 10-15ft tall once fully grown. But it was designed for being as maintenance free as possible as i dont know how active ill be in the coming years.

Maybe just a bad plant or bad luck. First one I had didnt do well either.
Second one  I got I thought was doing ok till I moved it about 2 feet because I wanted to better locate it. then it REALLY took off.
Next one I got took off right from the start. Your supposed to cut them way back like you would a rose bush at the end of the season . I didnt do it one year and it was all I could do to keep it manageable. Like I said. they grow like weeds and will get REALLY big if you let them. I keep em trimmed back to about 3-4 feet till mid July after which I just let them go nuts. what I end up with is a big bush with alot of flowers and alot of butterflies. I'll see what pics I still have later.
Winter shouldnt be a problem. You possibly just had bad luck as I do nothing to mine other then trim them back.

I'm trying to plant more and more perennials that bloom every year with only a few  patches of annuals as im getting tired for spending several hundred dollars every year  for plants I end up replanting next year.LOL

Gotta be careful with those though too as some like to spread like wildfire.

17, you're the man.

And the things that matter to you so resonate with what matters to me.

I respect you immensely ... and you know, guys j*g around on these BBS all the time, and go  'salute' over the most tawdry things; but, like, you've totally won my  regard.

Except, dude, show what you've just written to your English teacher; tell her I sent you. She'll be equally wowed; then, she'll break your knuckles with her nun ruler.

And so, if you ever want to get a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts (I have a couple) learn how to spell, punctuate, and get a bandage for your knuckles.

I forgot to trim our BF bush early this year.  It's getting too big.  It's located at the corner of our yard next to the neighbors driveway.  I know they can't see traffic coming down the road.  I was worried about trimming it now, thinking it might ruin it for the year.

Drediock, you think it'll be OK to trim it back about a foot all the way around?  Right now it's about 6 ft tall and 5 ft across?

Went earlier today to the airport to work for about 4 hours and got about 20-30 ft of bed one's brick work done which is about half of that bed. Still have to till that bed though because i wasnt able to today. I also have to finish getting the last bit of dead plants out of the end since i previously wasnt able to because of cars being parked there.

The front of the rocks where you can see the dirt will be filled in with river rock most likely to give it some sort of boarder.

thought i had updated this, but i guess i didnt...

But on thursday, i was able to complete the bed one wall and here it is:

it still needs to be tilled though. Tomarrow, i might go over for a little while and start on the second bed since we sort of celebrated fathers day today.

still have to cut 2 bricks for it which ill have done last.

I have done a few projects like this ... I would suggest digging down about 6-8" git rid of the dirt, put in some weed stop matting, and refilling with topsoil or mulch. When planting just cut a hole through the mat. this will keep the weeds away for a few years. If you plant in that dirt weeds again next year.

well im gonna till it and then add another 6 inches of top soil to bring it up close to the top of the bricks, then ill put the weed tarps down, plant the plants and then put the mulch on top of the tarp. That way, the mulch is seperated from the soil so it makes planting easier by just brushing the mulch aside and cutting the tarp to put the plant in.

We did this at our house and didnt put any tarps down at all and the mulch itself was able to keep weeds down pretty well and any that did come up are easy to get out.
