Already been done, a US built Liberian registered ship charted by BP back in March 1967. Torrey Canyon struck rocks off the southern shoreline of England and spilled 31,000,000 gallons of oil that spread over most of the coastline of Southern England and parts of France. Being a first Supertanker disaster methods and equipment for a clean up of that size were not available. They even tried bombing the wreck but that proved to be a futile effort with over 25% of the bombs missing the target and the fire started by those that hit was extinguished by an unusually high Spring tide.
