Where do you find it on that site? I went to the download center and can only find 8.0a.

I got it. I saw the runtime and grabbed it, and it gave me the 8.1 engine. I assume that is correct, and had no trouble on install.

Note: Never do this unless you need to. If everything is working properly for you now, DO NOT install 8.1. It has lots of potential to cause problems, so I'd advise you only to install 8.1 if you NEED to. If it ain't broke, don't screw with it!

Oh... and here is why you don't need to bother with DX 8.1:

It's slower than 8.0a. I suppose it's possible that it's more stable.... yeah right!

I found little difference in formal testing, but I had a definite improvement with FPS in most newer games such as OFP, Ghost Recon, Sub Command, IL-2 etc. Stability was a non issue for me as I never had any stability problems with the older DirectX 8.0a either.
