popped the sucker in in place of gf2mx400

the fps counter at 1280x1024 is pegged at 70-85fps (85fps refresh rate)

the 3dmark for my computer with gf2mx400 was around 2700

with the gf3 ti500 it is 7000

really amazing how much difference vid card makes.

How much did you pay for it and where did you buy it from?

Actually, Cit I'm interested in your whole system.  You built it yourself right?

What Mobo/CPU did you go with?   Did you have any problems getting it working OK?

First time builder here, hesitant to take the plunge but getting close...

(waiting just lets the parts get better and cheaper)

the asus a7m266 mobo is getting a bit old and I was upset with it at first because I ordered an asus a7v266 and they gave me a a7m instead but after nonstop rock solid reliability the a7m266 has so far offered I said if it aint broke dont fix it and to hell with the small performance gain a faster motherboard would offer.

I had no problems assembling my computer.
the meticulous part which you have to be precise with is installing the cpu into the motherboard and then installing the heatsink/fan on top of the cpu core (very critical w amd cpus which will burn up in 30 seconds without a heatsink attached!)

be tedious in setting the jumpers correctly on the motherboard and on your cd roms/and drives/zipdrives/dvdroms etc so that the master and slave are correctly sequenced, check them dont rely on factory to set them correctly.

everything else pops into place and connects to the power supply.

fastest amd mobos are the new viakt266a mobos which are very fast (faster than asus a7m266 and a7v266) all because of the little "a" at the end    :)

fastest available amd processors available now are the palmino athalonxp processors.

AMD is cheap dirt cheap.

I dont believe the hype that AMD and fans say that a 1.4ghz tweaked out amd cpu/mobo rig with identical peripherals matched or beat a p4 2ghz that is tweaked out in the same fashion in a framerate video game race.

but it is a true that a 1.4ghz amd266 tbird is faster (much faster)in video games framerate races than a p4 1.5ghz     :)

the 3dmark fps dweeb guage shows that ultra tweaked out p4 2ghz machines are scoring as high as 10,000 while tweaked amd 1.4ghz (non xp) tops out around 8000 for ultra perfectly tweaked systems with each using a geforce3 ti500...

but they are both so friggin fast who gives a crap.

buy the AMD tbird 266fsb ($120) or amd athalon xp 1.53ghz (~$260)and you have enough pennies left to upgrade when you would like too.

if you buy the friggin INTEL $900 somthing dollar p4 2ghz cpu with the rdram  you will not have many pennies left and will have to upgrade at a later time if on same budget as buying amd.

pretty much cost analysis type stuff for us poor people.
considering the fact that computers go obsolete in a year or less buying ultra expensive top of the line stuff when you could buy cost effective top of the line stuff is downright idiotic for this type of application.

many thanks to creamo who saved me from pissing money away on a p4 2 ghz      :)

75-85 fps in cockpit when in flight?

I cant get over 50 fps, and I run AH on 2nd to highest res and 32 bit...and my system is identical to yours except for the zip drive and brand of gforce3 (I got ASUS GForce3Deluxe 64M).

Needless it is to say, I hate you. Very very much.  :D  :D  :D

I would be interested in knowing how you set up your bios and gforce settings. I bet that's where my problem is =P

I find the power supply to be a big factor as well.

this 400 watt antec model is excellent. the system runs cooler when it gets required power at correct levels for each voltage wattage etc vs underpowered and variable fluctuating power levels

The A7M266 board is still quite good and is the most painless to set up IMO.  Also, don't believe 3dmark2001 scores are everything.  The Athlon XP 1800+ is without a doubt much faster overall than the 2 Gig P4.  AH in particular is faster on Athlons than on P4s.  (I've tested them both.)

If you want to see something funny look at 3dmark2000 scores and 3dmark2001 scores at the same time.  You will find that the 1.4 Tbird and 2 Gig P4 flip flop positions.  Add win2k or xp to the equation and the Athlon loses less performance than the P4.  I'd say 3dmark2000 is likely not optimized for either processor and 3dmark2001 has some Intel compiled and/or optimized games in there.

Cit,
I run a similar system, ASUS A7M266 with AMD 1.4GHz.  I also upgraded the powersupply.

What are your bio settings to run the 1.4 chip with the 266DDR memory.  I just want to check because I can't find anywhere that talks about the correct settings.

btw, I'm running a Radeon 64DDR with it and get in the 60's near the ground.  At alt I've actually broken 100.
