Can you capture territory...

...in the AvA Rooms? 

If not, that could be one of the reasons why you don't have numbers.

We had a squad nite Saturday, but no one wanted to fly AvA because they wanted to capture bases and roll across a map and feel a sense of 'doing' something, instead of just Air-Air.

Are some of the rooms 'capturable' and others not? Why are they not?  Are GV's enabled?

Just curious, and wanting to fly more AvA,

Uh yeah, the bases can be captured. You should have jumped in last week with Jaegers Bastogne tank wars, lots of base capturing going on and some good battles. Read the setups so you know what is available to fly/drive.

Ok - I read the AvA write up on the new events site, and it stated that AvA is meant to focus on historical plane matchups, and capturing territory is not 'emphasized'.

But sometimes you can capture scenes just like in the Main Arenas, depending on the scenario?  Of the several times I've been in AvA, capturing wasn't available (I think!) - it was strictly Air to air.

At any rate, my point is that I believe being able to capture territory will draw in more folks on a regular basis. It gives you a 'reason' for being there, and gives you something to do if the room is empty, or nearly so.

Just as a data point for me, when did the AvA rooms first start?  Is it relatively new?

There are some setups where troop transports aren't available which makes taking bases impossible, but we're working on more goal/strategy/teamwork oriented setups. Of course it depends on the maps available too. A lot of the players who frequent the AvA are more into the dogfighting aspects rather than base taking, mainly because base taking can be done in any of the main arenas...it's the 1337 toon-ace syndrome.

You did miss a good setup last week, and we did take what you said before seriously...very surprised you didn't check it out.


Someone that has been here a long time can tell you how long the AvA has been around, I'm thinking 2001/02 or something like that, and it had a different name.

base capture is almost always enabled. if its not, its because of a problem. awhile back there was a problem that wouldnt allow it for some reason. nomally it is always setup for base capture albeit you might have to work for it. not standard capture settings but maybe 15+. it just depends on the setup and the CM.

That is a good question and one that I asked about 5 years ago.  The quick answer is that base capture in the AvA varies from setup to setup.  As a rule base capture requires more troops than in the main arenas.

Because the maps are small, and the 2 country limited plane / vehicle setups have to be done manually, capturing bases could shut the arena down.  This happens if someone captures enough bases that the map gets reset.  When a map gets reset it goes to default MA settings (or something like that) and often times that means that only one country has planes enabled or some other funky mess that simply closes the arena down until someone with the privileges can spend a part of their day fixing it again.

What I do is switch sides and capture bases evenly, or recapture the same base.

There are ongoing long discussions about including capture objectives, and last week was the result of one such effort.  THE BIGGER PROBLEM is that porking and taking bases Main Arena style is not suited to an arena with low numbers, one of the reasons I rarely visit Early War or Mid War.  Too much time spent looking for an enemy who is doing everything he can to evade you, so that he can sneak a base.  I have an old copy of "Where's Waldo" if that is what I wanted to do.

If you or anyone can come up with ideas that would put base capture in the center of the action, I am all ears.

Everyone else - thanks for the replies.  I have another noob question....what's 'Porking'?  I've heard that used many times, and couldn't find it in Webster.  I would guess it means destroying/capturing things for points, score or perks. 

Chili - isn't 'winning' the map the goal?  In FA, taking territory and winning a map with low numbers produced some FANTASTIC battles.

Anyway, I need to fly around a lot more in ALL the rooms.  Shoot, I haven't even driven a GV yet or flown a rotte of buff's yet, and only dive bombed one tank.  I'll refrain from suggestions for awhile till I get more time in game.

Rainbows? Those are gooooood eating. I use to love fishing for rainbows and speckles. I'm the only one in the house that likes fish though so, unless it's canned tuna or frozen fish sticks, no go.

Porking is bombing objects, radar, ords, troop, fuel on a base with no intent on capturing it. Sometimes it's just used as a term to describe the act of bombing bases. Killing the hangars is termed "toolshedding". Welcome to the colorful world of AH.

In the main arenas, winning the map is the goal...in the AvA the battle is generally the goal, at least it used to be. The big issue is that the AvA has to be reset manually, there is no automated map rotation like the main arenas. So if someone wins the war and the map resets, someone with admin privileges has to go in and manually put it back to the way it's supposed to be for the setup.

Also referred to as "Milk Running".  Although those terms often imply doing something that is not challenging or as you guessed, to run up scores, they do have strategic value in a "win the war" scenario.

It takes people on both sides to fight or else wInInG t3H WarZ means nothing.. If nobody is there to place supplies or fight the milkers there's no reason to take bases . It's squeak behavior period. If people are on and don't want to defend thier bases that's another story.

porked-- screwed up, un-playable, not working correctly, un-useable.

in game-- ie: 'lets go pork ords at base 5!' == lets go kill ordinance at base 5!

in the AVA, you wont get any points for capturing bases. the AVA has no scoring in it, so if you milk the map, you'll pork it!
