MA Missions
« on: June 13, 2010, 03:57:08 PM »
I was wondering why or not do you join a mission.  Is it the poster,  the plane set, or you just kinda wanna do you're own thing?

I know I won't join a mission if the plane set is mixed with axis and allied planes.  For some reason it bothers me.  I wish we had a German goon even.

Used to...they are typically a buncha guys flattening an empty base...then orbiting for vulches until some OTHER guy kills the ack. We take the base....and, all-in-all... ya spend 30 minutes having not very-much-fun. (IMO) K's Candy Mountain missions are interesting...as is anything out of the ordinary '15 110's/tiffy's'...yawn. Was on one a while back...we took like 12 D3a's...ended poorly, but was fun :aok

In 2009, I did fly 4998 sorties in LW arenas. 5 of them in missions.

I guess it's "you just kinda wanna do you're own thing" for me ;)

Exactly what he said.  Used to.  Got boring.  Especially when the hoard discourages resistance.

If I join at all any more I actually like flying the goon.

Little edit...  I always liked thunderegg missions.  Trying to sneak a base 3 sectors back, weaving between enemy dar.  The thing that turned me off missions was the "voolch! voolch!" stuff.

99% of the missions are created by completely incompetent mission planners, which is why the majority fail.  A long time ago when Rip used to post missions, I'd join them if I was on the same side at the time.  They were always fun, had achievable objectives and wasn't planned by some idiot with no clue.  Hadn't joined a mission in over 5 years until just recently when I joined one of Karaya's Candy Mountain missions were we all upped B4Ns and torpedoed ground vehicles at some Vbase.  Had a blast and will probably join more Candy Mountain missions in the future but that's probably the only times I'll join a mission now.

It was B5Ns you nooblet. And it may have worked if our planes hadn't out dove our torpedoes.   :( :joystick:

I join missions everyday, but usually it's something within my own squad. We really don't need 20 guys going noe. To me the fun is in seeing how few we need to take a base, not how many.

I don't join many missions simply because I don't find the majority of posted missions interesting.

It seems like the vast majority of the advertised missions have the same assortment of aircraft thrown together, P-51's, BF-110's, Tyhpoons, etc.  Sometimes I see six or so different airframes all with 1-2 people signed up in each slot.

So I'm faced with the prospect of joining a mission, rolling into an area with little opposition and fighting the other members in the flight for the few kills that are available.  Then to add on top of that the one part of the mission that I would find interesting - historical immersion get's thrown out the window during planning and there's little left to appeal to me.

Base taking generally isn't a part of the game that I enjoy very much but if I can't find a decent little furball to join I would probably join missions from time to time if the plane set was a little more themed, and/or unusual.

Currently I'm on a 5th AF binge so I would love to see a B-25C strafer flight being escorted by either P-38G's or P-40E's or something similar consisting of some of the less often used MW type planes.

I don't really join NOE's, but I do LOVE high alt fighter sweeps...etc, where you just up some kind of random plane picked out by the mission maker, and all 5-12 of y'all just go somewhere and dogfight. THATS what I love.
No one knows what the future may bring.

I don't like NOE's.

However, I love fun, high eny plane missions, sweeps, etc. For example, I posted on country one day if any one wanted to do a P40 run with me. Next thing I know you've got 6-7 P40s on the runway rolling. It's just one of those types of things that keep me in this game. Some guys still like to have a blast even if they might die because they aren't in an 'uber' plane.

Yeah Soulyss, I when on a P40-E fighter sweep with the Nightmares one night  :lol  Had a frigging blast! I too like the oddball missions.  I just might throw out a Stuka raid on a CV tonight.  :lol

I think a lot of the aircraft selection that goes into mission planning is done because it is perceived to be the best tool for the job, which makes sense.  However I typically find that Aces High is at it's best when the people around me are more interested in the getting rather than the having, the trying rather than succeeding.

When the effort becomes the goal in an of itself is when the game really shines.

I second Ack-Ack and Soulyss, and I too miss Ripsnot's missions. The poor guy couldn't enter the arena without 20 guys yelling at him to post some missions.

To expand on Ack-Ack's post, the problems include: Inappropriate plane mix and loadouts, especially fuel, and poorly planned distances for the stated target altitude. Most missions are posted by bomber guys who can't keep a decent conga line, let alone anything better then a gaggle of bombers. If you don't take it seriously, it can be fun to watch them lead through turns that loose drones and of course, then guys start bailing out right and left. I've seen twenty player missions end up with less then half that by the time they reach the target area.
Easy in-game again.

It was my luck to get one of the infamous dud torpedoes, otherwise that direct hit right through the flak panzie's turret would have sunk it.
