Blurred vision
« on: June 17, 2010, 09:36:49 PM »
I know it would probably hamper people with low end graphics cards but with fragment shading available on most cards, it would be possible to make the vision a little blurred as well as the tunnel forming as you went to a black out.

Its very minor, but it could be a neat effect.

Does your vision become blurred when blacking out?

I don't know. Between the current black out conditions plus blurred vision we might have to start flying by brail  :lol

I still wish for my blackout idea, which ties into yours Ardy.

Wish : gradual loss of color with increasing blurryness around the outside of screen (tunnel vision), then entire screen darkening.

Are you sure the vision is supposed to become blurry?
I remember the tunnel vision effect but I don't recall anything blurry. Maybe it's just me though.

Here

http://www.bordeninstitute.army.mil/published_volumes/harshEnv2/HE2ch33.pdf

look at the part about 'Negative Acceleration'.

'A pilot is exposed to negative acceleration (–Gz)
during an outside loop (ie, when the pilot’s head
points to the outside of the turn) or the transition
from a steep climb into a dive. Increased venous
pressure and pooling of the blood in the head and
face cause a sensation of fullness and sometimes
headache. With longer exposures, facial edema develops,
along with lacrimation, blurred vision, and
a red-colored visual fog.'

No- I've never noticed that personally though there are wide range of physiological factors and responses in play. Everyone's different.  One bud of mine was in peak physical shape and should've had everything going for him but could not take more than 4G before going niters even with proper technique. AH models blackout very well IMO. (Same for the "approach to stall" feel) I'm also a fan of the "blackout relapse" you often get in-game after unloading the aircraft. This is also pretty realistic and is when many people are performing "the funky chicken".  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GTSQCV9IIo (Remember this is a "best of" compilation and I believe they are trying 9G sans suits here if memory serves:)

As for redouts, never experienced one and don't plan on it.  The "red-colored visual fog" completely makes sense and I think it would be a great gameplay addition if players who routinely use high negative-G moves get rewarded with realistic consequences for rather unrealistic tactics.   :salute

After I started blood pressure Meds dropped my G tolerance a bit.

Also found out extrema heat and sun effect can effect tolerance greatly.

You know you have pushed the edge a little to far when you release and all you can do for about 15 secs is hang on and fly level. And you a clueless which way you are headed.

Havn't tested my max in long time, did 7.5 in L39 dog fighting,  once with Bob Shaw we were finding the corner speed of my RV. Bloody bob is a short little guy and has a greet tolerances, he Kept us at 6g's  for about 45 secs of soda straw , my eyes finally went way black, but didn't g lock since he release shortly there after. Other wise 1 or 2 more secs I would lights out.

Same day we had lots of fun seeing who could loop from lowest starting speed. But not a lot of guys want to go up to find max G's so I don't get to push the edge that hard alone.

lol, I know that feeling, I have never flown a real airplane but I rode in a Boeing Stearman while the pilot was doing aerobatics in it and the Cerebral aspects, which can't be modeled in a computer game of course, are pretty intense. After doing several moves back to back with little time in between I was feeling a little disoriented and had the 'just got out of bed and stood up too quick' feeling.

Pilots are the most professional crazy people i know  :rofl          Great story!!

I remember a time flying with my uncle (DEA agent )and his buddy (airline pilot) There i was sitting in the back seat if this plane, watching 2 grown men fight over who wants to fly the plane, meanwhile the plane is rocking back and forth, side to side, up and down. I dont think my face could have turned more shades of green if i was a chamelion. Later i found out that this was all planned on the ground, to freak out the guy in the back seat.

Your all nuts  :aok

I think the blackin' out we currently have is bad enough.  Keep i mind that blood loss will effect different people in different ways.  There are lots of narratives out there that give examples of how some pilots made it back on adrenaline alone, then once wheels were down they died.  There is another story of a bomber pilot that died of a (probable) heart attack once he realized he had a small cut from ack ack shrapnel, he supposedly didnt lose enough blood for most people to even be concerned with.

I think the only G's I've ever experienced (other than a roller coaster) was when my flight instructor inadvertently shoved the wheel forward in the Cesspool 150 (made in 1973!) when he tried to tie his shoe in flight.  Those sudden and unexpected negative G's almost made me hurl.

I doubt I could even handle 3-4 G's for very long.  I'm 6ft 1in and about 240lbs.  I'll stick to the gentle turns and banks.   :)
