TrackIR 3 profile help...TrackIR 5 worth it?
« on: December 13, 2010, 08:59:47 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I have a TrackIR 3 with Vector expansion and I have always loved it since the day I got it.

I am having a heck of a time getting everything setup now that I am trying to return to the game and have hit a serious wall on things to do to get the system playable for me.

Does anyone have a Track IR 3 profile that they use in the game that they would be willing to point me to?  I have checked on Natural Points forums and have only found a Track IR 5 profile, at least I think it will only work with Ver 5.

This brings me to another question/discussion:

I love the concept.  I use the track clip for the baseball cap because that is what was available when I first got this system years ago.  I have seen the proclip but to be honest, I dont enjoy flying with my headset at least 50% of the time.  I am fine with wearing the cap.

     -  For those that have had TIR3 with Vector and upgraded to TIR5...why did you do so?
     -  Did you find that there was any real difference?

I am fortunate in that mine still works but have the issue that many of us have had where the rear view is not entirely the best and I find myself having it lock at just aft of the wing when turning head left.  I can turn the other way and go all the way back.  I also have the recenter TRACKIR button mapped on the Joystick and have used that for years and will continue to do so.

Thanks a bunch folks....and if anyone has an example profile that will work in TIR3 with vector I would be appreciative...the learning curve on programming it is almost as steep as the CH Control Manager which I am still struggling with.

 :)

EDIT:

I think I have cracked the code a bit on the TrackIR software a tad bit and have been able to adjust the curves to a more aggressive setting.  I had no idea that you could actually click on the curves and modify them from inside of the window for the axis you are editing!

I have found that if I make the curves a bit more aggressive, that I am able to "bypass" the locking of the head when "checking 6".

I am not sure if this is enabled or possible, but I haven't set up my head positions in the game.  I will experiment and see if the TRACKIR views are relative to the saved head position or if they are from a standard point in the cockpit.

I have the same rig, a TrackIR3 Pro with the Vector add-in, running the TIR software version 4.

Here's a link to my profile, a slightly modified version of the demo profile from Virtual Flight Productions (see the notes).  I've had the "smoothing" set way low for this, down at "2" if memory serves.  I'll double-check that when I get home tonight.

Hope this is useful.   :salute

I have the Aces High "Track IR view" box checked, and it always seems to move relative to the standard "neutral" point.  <shrug>

Thanks Bino!

I have been able to really adjust the curves and am getting to the point where it is running smoothly most of the time.  I will check out your profile on the game in an hour or so.  I assume I just paste that into notepad or something and then slap it in the Track IR appropriate area.

I couldnt really tell if it was from the saved head position or the standard head position for my testing last night (late night, was tired) so I will give that a shot again today!

Take care and thanks again for the profile!

No problem!  :salute

BTW, I have two buttons programmed on my throttle for the TIR "on/off" toggle and the TIR "center" command.  I use them both pretty often.   :aok

As for whether the TIR 5 is "worth it": I would think so, since the field of view is so much larger, and the resolution is so much higher.  Guess I'll have to wait to see if Santa has one for me on his sleigh.   ;)

Bino,

I never had the TIR Off function on my sticks....just used the keyboard IRRC or I simply took the hat off...LOL!

My CH Fighterstick is on the way (amazon says shipped and should get here tomorrow PM!)....so that is really neat for me.  Now that I will have the full CH setup I can really tweak the buttons/hats....your suggestion of TIR OFF is a good one and I will map that to one of the hats I think.

Do you use the PRO CLIP?

I am not even sure if the Pro Clip works with the TIR3 but it should right?  In the profile manager software there is a spot for it I believe when editing profiles to show either track cap, clip, dot, trueview......it was late last night when I was setting it all up..

The wider field of view MAY be nicer but now that I can adjust the curves it seems as though I don't have NEAR the lockups that I have had before.  I like an aggressive to the point of insane on the "Z" or zoom axis.  That has fixed a lot of the functionality of the device.

I flattened out the first two dots on the curve and then essentially maxed out the rest so it has a little deadband in it.  The RECENTER function is mapped to the pinky button on the throttle and I use it TONS.

If I can get it up working fine, then unless there is a HUGE benefit to going with TIR5 then I will keep this one for a long time....but ya never know right?

Nope.  I have that simple triangle thingie with the reflectors, stapled onto the brim of a baseball cap.  I remember reading somewhere (TIR forums?) that a cap puts the reflectors further away from the rotational axis of your head, and so gives the TIR more movement to read.  IIRC, the Pro Clip with the LED lights mounts right on the headband of a headphone set.

If there is a check-box for the Pro Clip in the V.4 software, it should be OK with your TIR3...?  <shrug>

After some tweaking, I have been able to set it up pretty close to where I am satisfied!

I tend to like the curves more aggressive than they are setup in the defaults.

By messing with them for a while now, I have "solved" the lockups I have been having.  I think they were occurring because I was approaching the view window limits.

Cool!  I seem to get both smoother response and fewer lock-ups if I maintain at least a two or three foot distance between the TIR on the monitor and the reflectors on my cap.

Likewise on the distance.  To me it seems that if you are within 18" to 24" it has the lockup....if you move back then it seems to be much better.  I am about 2.5' from the 26" screen and the TIR and that is working out great!
