Also the reflector gunsights do allow for quite some head movements.

I do, Cheese.  I like it and it works like a charm for me, but it's not as refined a product as TIR, so it will require some effort on your part to get the most out of it.  I think the software is fairly comparable to TIR's in terms of features, and it works seamlessly with Aces High.  Just like TrackIR, the key to your success with it will be in how well you manage to tweak your settings.

The difference will be in the quality of the camera you use with it, and whether you will build or buy an LED clip (or reflector setup).

Here is an older thread about Freetrack, might give you some food for thought:

You can program the TIR profile to have a little dead zone in the center, or very little translation of head movement to keep your center view steady.  Your hat switch views will also over-ride TIR a bit, so if you hold down your forward view hat, TIR won't move your view much.

You also develop a lot of neck muscle memory after using it for awhile.  You never realize how much you move your head during combat until you are forced to control it with TrackIR!

The most disconcerting thing is when  you fly without it after you've gotten used to it, or if you watch a film from the cockpit, and you can't stop yourself from craning your head to see outside of the frame, and the view doesn't move with you.  It's just a strange feeling, almost like going to pick up a full suitcase that you think is empty.

Thanks guys I have another question.  How about the zoom feature I know you can lean in to zoom with Track IR but does AH2 zoom view feature work with TrackIR.  When you use the AH2 zoom view and you turn your head does TrackIR show everything zoomed in.

Thanks,

Yes it does.
I zoom in a few times in this video.  It's from this past Christmas Eve when Hitech flew around in Santa's Sleigh.  Sorry if it's a little dark...it was night in the arena.   :D

TrackIr is just bascially working like a mouse for viewing in AH pan mode. It's just telling the game where your head is and in which direction you are looking. Zoom is fully independent from that.

Thanks IMADot and Lusche you answered my question about zooming in.  dhyran you said you have a button program to reset before shooting is this the center button I have read about with TrackIR or is this some other feature.

Thanks,

dhyran you said you have a button program to reset before shooting is this the center button I have read about with TrackIR or is this some other feature.

It's a TrackIr feature. There are 3 different hotkeys:

- center: Recenters (doh!) the TrackIr unit. The place your head is and the direction you are looking into is considered being "straight" & forward the moment you press the button. It's similar to recalibrating a joystick. I usually do it when I start a sortie, or when I left the seat and coming back.

- TrackIr toggle: Toggles the TrackIr on and off

- precision: Toggles a "precision mode" on and off  (I never use that)

On top of that, the good old hat button can override the TrackIr. Some players press hat "forward" when being about to shoot, some recenter. I do none of this. I don't disable or override the TrackIR for shooting.

My main suggestion: Take the time to tweak everything a lot, from placement & lighting to TIR software settings & profile.
TrackIR is the most "personal" input gadget, and different people are using very different settings.

Just to expand on what Lusche said. Ideally you want any head movement you can make while still seeing your monitor to be tracked without the reflectors/lights being blocked or masked.

Lusche

Sorry for so many questions just looking for some answers before spending my money.  What about the clip that goes on the headset.  In you opinion will it fit on any headset and is it comfortable to use.

Thanks,
