FW190 F-8
« on: June 21, 2010, 04:16:10 PM »
Hello All,

Is it true the FW190 F-8 is built tougher (in this game) being a ground attack variant?

This seems to be true to me but I do not have any facts to prove this.

Thanks for your comments,

Yes. It has assitional armor modeled. It almost rarely ever loses oil, but it's a LOT heavier because of this so it's the worst plane to dogfight by a long shot.

I've always been told that the F-8 has more armor around the engine and with only being able to glance at the aircraft weight in relation to the 190A-8 there really is no other way to verify it (other than noticing less engine oil on the windshield  :) ).

HTC didn't have an F8 set of specs, so they just modeled it with a climb and speed chart identical to the A8 (which is wrong). However, that extra weight will really hurt it in any turning or manuvering it needs to do. The F8 is 500lbs heavier than the already-500lbs-overweight A8 model, and is the heaviest of all FW models.

Krusty is right its 1000lbs heavier than the A8 should be. It has more armor, and is heavier. But that just makes it a better deacking plane (start up hill, pick up some speed, and kill ack gun, and get out before you take too many hits.

However, I didn't know HTC gave it the same speed and climb chart as the 190A8.

provided your rocket doesn't ricochet, and provided the armor doesn't do its job for once.

Nope. It's not a HE rocket. It's a shaped charge warhead made to punch through armor up to 90mm.

If you hit, most tanks in AH really just go boom.

IDK if its that simple. I've seen a T-34/85 take at least 5 rockets to the side with no effect (was sitting next to the guy). When he pulled forward, there was a cluster of craters, a clear spot (where he was sitting, and blocked the rockets), and then another cluster of craters.

I've also scored hits on panzers yield no kill, which makes me think theres more than "it penetrates 90mm of armor, so if you hit something that has less than 90mm's of armor, you kill it".

This tour I was trying (again) to use the F-8 as my main tank buster, and to that purpose I practiced a lot offline and watched the films. I found that when I did hit, the tank was gone most of the time... the problem was just to get any hits and no "near misses" in the first place.

Isn't a bit of a HE blast modeled too? Yesterday I killed 2 M3s with these rockets and after reviewing the film, I was suprised to find that in both instances the rockets just missed the targets, but the M3s still blew up. I had the impression that these rockets are indeed all or nothing, depending if you hit or not.

Yes, it is. You still can use them to kill structures and the like. I use the 190F-8 to kill cruisers with a 500kg bomb and a salvo of rockets.
It's just like an added advantage of being able to kill tanks better with a direct hit. With a near miss, they work similar to other (HE) rockets.

That would explain my damaged engine when I salvoed that M4. I thought he got me with his pintil.
