Best Mobo for an AMD 1600 XP?
« on: October 18, 2001, 12:32:00 AM »
I am looking to get a mobo for an AMD 1600. I have heard many different opinions and I am curious as to what you guys think would be the best. I had it narrowed down to three. The Asus AVA266 witht he ALI chipset, the Abit KG7 with VIA chipset or the Epox 8k7a+ VIA chipset too.  Right now I am heavily leaning towards the Epox 8K7a+. What do you guys think?

Please keep in mind I dont want to spend much more than $150

thanks

Coop, I bet both of those MB's are great, and honestly I dont know the differences between the 2. Bloom and other advised me early on in my shopping to make sure and get a MB with the via KT266a chipset. Emphasis eon the "a". I read this aritcal which is featuring th new AMD XP processor and they used the EPOX board for their test. So that is where I got the notion to buy it. But ASUS is a great brand, no doubt it is as good or better. I havent done the research yet :) I did do a search for via KT266a and found 2 more MB's being released with the chipset.

Gluck! I am right behind you :) wife release $600 for me to use :)

If I were you, I'd invest to EpoX 8KHA2 or 8KHA+ which are based on via kt266a chipset.

I was disappointed to realize they land here only after a month or so.. So I bought KG7 which made me more gray hairs than any other computer so far. Live! put together with 686 just destroyed my system..

I had to spend a full weekend studying about the multiple quirks of VIA chipsets untill I finally managed to get my system stable.

Oh, not to mention the kt266A beats my current board at about 20% margin in memory bandwith..

I like Asus boards, but I do not recommend that Ali chipset on the A7A266 anymore. (There aren't any problems with it, it's just not as fast as the others.)  I'd get one of the other two.

I'd go with the Abit KG7-Raid. This board rules.
OR wait for more VIA 266a chipset boards to come out. They are very fast.

As for ASUS, it was one of my favorite companies until my motherboard starting FALLING APART for no reason.
