My new RC
« on: June 27, 2010, 04:47:05 PM »
This this is pretty darned cool, not that big,(about 4 feet long)Not all that fast (maxes out @ 100mph ish) But how cool.. Very rare in the RC world..an F-14 Tomcat!

This is powered by dual Electric ducted fans, turning approx 55,000 rpm.. painted up in Black Bunny colors...

and... It has FUNCTIONAL in-flight swing wings!!!

Pics:

Someday, when I can talk my wife out of another 5 grand for an engine, I want to do a larger turbine version..but for now, I got my fix on my favorite aircraft of all time!

So when you slow down do the wings actually spread out and vice versa if you floor it?
Landing is overrated.

In theory I could mix the swing wing to the throttle on my radio, But I have it setup on a 3 position switch, so I can set it to full extended, mid, and full delta.  I could also put it on an analog switch, but this method is easier.. basically I put it on the same funciton on my radio as the "flaps" so when i throw the flap switch to the 3 positions, it sets the wings accordingly.

Very cool. Is it possible you could adapt it so that It actually changes depending on how much throttle you have?

Have you asked around? I mean?  Seems I read something somewhere that this really huge RC company was creating a type of control modification that would allow it... then again, my memory is horrible.

i could easily do that with my radio, I have a ton of programmable mixes on this radio... (JR 12x 12 channel DSM2)... but,i did not want it linked that way, I want it manually controllable.

Just remember that the wing configuration in the real thing was more related to speed [gross oversimplification] than throttle.  For example, during takeoff, you'd want the wings full forward, but with full power.  So, probably best he keeps it separate from the throttle.

Yeah, but throttle usually controls the speed  :D

But that is cool how you would like it to be manual, nice RC.

I looked at a lot of other RC F-14s, and they are all crap, the wings don't swing and it is partially made out of soft foam
This one is excellent, have a blast flying it.

I'm all for playing Kenny Loggins whilst flying an RC F-14  :rofl

Then again, I'm also all for listening to Kenny Loggins WITHOUT flying an RC F-14  :aok

Does CAP not have incredibly look-alike F-14 with swing wings?  :D

I gotta admit, no matter how many times I look at that RC bird, it is still a beaut.

Yeah, but throttle usually controls the speed  :D

You can have 20mph speed, full throttle. What happens if you move your wings to a configuration that has stall speed of 40mph? You crash. The change of speed is not instantaneous, even though in R/C planes the thrust to weight ratio can be staggering.
