Can anyone read Guitar tabs?
« on: July 01, 2010, 07:53:50 PM »
I really want to play this little bit on my piano. It's the Main Riff to the song "Sleeping Stars" by Wintersun, but I can not read guitar tabs so I don't know what notes are being played. Can anyone here translate this to something I might understand? I tried my best, but guitar is the most confusing instrument for me  :o . Thanks for any help.

It's section 81-84 and then it repeats

the lines represent guitar strings
from high to low
e
b
g
d
a
e

the numbers represent frets, every fret is a semi tome step from the last so 2 on the A string is B
you should be able to transcribe TAB with that.

No thank you Turkish, I'm sweet enough.

I understood how the lines equal E, A, D, G, B, and E, and the numbers represent frets. The rest I'm lost on. Maybe I should tell you that I have zero experience with a guitar. I do play drums and piano though, but I'm self taught so I have very little knowledge of musical definitions.  :o

They're Sixteenth notes.

And in the first bar, the \ indicates a slide from note to note.

Funny -- I was going to answer your question of "Can anyone read Guitar tabs?" simply by saying, "Yes."   :lol

Guitar tabs are meant to be simple interpretations of how to play something on the guitar... they don't really show 'music' like traditional notation does, just which fret to press down on which string. Most tabs don't have any kind of system of denoting rhythm.

Using guitar tabs for anything else other than playing guitar would be kind of a pita...

I was thinking if I could figure out what notes are played on the guitar, then I could carry that over to piano (most likey with a few minor changes). So, are you saying the way I'm going about it is wrong?

I know that there is a program called Guitar Pro that can play guitar tabs. You also have the ability to have a guitar fretboard and piano keys shown. If you could find a guitar pro version of the song, you can download guitar pro. You only get a free trial for 14 days or so, then you have to pay, but that should be long enough for you to get that down. I think. I'm sure you could download a jacked version of that, but I'm not sure.  ;)

Here is the song you're looking for in guitar pro tabs. http://www.911tabs.com/link/?5589392

Here is the link for the free trial of Guitar Pro 6. http://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php?pg=download

I hope that this was helpful for you.  :salute

There are buttons for those on the toolbar on top of the screen. If you could find a guitar pro version of the song, you can download guitar pro. so using the information I gave you you should be able to figure out which note is which. 7 on the A string is seven frets up the fret board, so, seven semitones up fraom A

eg.  A-A#-B-c-c#-d-d#-e

7 on the A string is E in the octave below Middle C

agood place to find guitar music in different forms of tab and sheet music is Ultimate guitar
