Yeah that only works for the old original XCOM allaire. Which I think I can do a pretty good job in without walkthroughs and cheats. However it is still a ball buster. I have played that almost all day today...thank goodness I work from home. Tomorrow I can't pull this crap though I have been doing this while on the phone with customers and it was a nightmare...loong night tonight getting caught up on putting orders in.

So how does the games on steam differ from the original?  That link covers 3 of the games Ufo: Enemy Unknown, Terror From the Deep, and Apocalypse.  It will let you know about know bugs like the paying for dirt bug and gives general knowledge about the known exploits.

The ones on Steam are the original. The one that Bozon linked up is only like the original in that you gotta research and hunt them down just like the original but while it is good there is just something lacking from it that I can't quite put my finger on. I have been playing the original in dosbox for a long time now and I lost my disks for UFO and TFTD so I just spent the cash and bought them on Steam.

Yea I've got the steam original that I picked up for 5 bucks, but I think I may need to invest in one of the programs that slows down your clock a bit to get it to play well.  Everything moves much, MUCH too quickly.

Those are some sweet looking rides that the good guys show up in. Might have to check this one out and see if I can get used to it. I was up until 4am this morning playing XCOM in dosbox...talk about getting your butt handed to you over and over again.
i'm addicted to the game but i can never win the whole game in anything over the 2nd difficulty... i have it in windows mode and it boots me every 30 minutes if i load the game back up too many times after dieing.

P.S.
NNNNNOOOOO!!!!!!!

After Fallout, now they did it to XCOM. This is not a sequal, it is nothing more than branding and marketing a completely unrelated game.

Next it will be "Chess II: the fall of the king". Now in first person, because turn based is so 1990. America in the 1950's is recovering from the apocalyptic invasion of the black pieces. A single white pawn takes it upon itself to save the white peo... (sorry, too racist) the other king from an inevitable faith. You will face up to 8 pawns of the black realm, knights, religious freaks with OCD that will only step on a certain color tiles and mobile fortifications. You may advance from pawn to a queen (yuck) and acquire new weapons and abilities such as the deadly two-forward-one-right knight secret move.

Oh come on! enough of this!  :furious
In the mean time, the last thing worth playing in the old style is UFO alien invasion. Open source and runs well on linux:

Fallout 3 was the best fallout :D and its expansions were near perfect. :D :D :D i can't wait for the next one this fall even IF it IS a spin-off

UFO had a more fast paced action than TFTD had. more ammo, more recoil shots, the aliens had all out shootouts with your squad unlike TFTD where you dont have as much cover or have the aliens working well as teams

Well I can win in the upper levels on UFO but I can't get past a mission in TFTD on the experienced level without loosing at least 3-8 "aquanauts" in a mission.

Hell I had one today where my first dude out the door opened it up and one of the two "Gillmen" were standing close to the door. One of them interrupted my turn and blast three guys on automatic (including the unlucky SOB who opened the hatch) and the second one popped a sonic grenade in just for good measure. The aliens have no duds btw...and boom I lost 9 more experienced "aquanauts" and that left me with one that was knocked the %^#@ out after grenade. I aborted the mission and made it home to have a alien ship following my Triton inbound and that fragger landed...it was a big SOB...and those fudgers invaded my base. Great thing about save games...you can always start over....too bad I had to completely start over from scratch because I forgot to SAVE THE GAME WHEN I GOT AHEAD!!!!!

I loved to beat xcom 1 with pure human tech.

autocannon..rocket launched... rifle.. laser rifle and grenades (proximity grenades were awesome).

the only alien tech i kinda liked was the elerium launcher 'cause it was so damn good (waypoints for the bomb's flight and a massive area blast? ooooh yeah).

but.. the rest was pure meh. even the silly flying armor ... I never used that. My guys went to mars wearing the same gear I had available in the first few turns. the savings alone from not buying or researching all the alien gear and selling the elerium let me build huge bases and recruit entire armies of peeps and have my own little air force  :devil

I did that a few times also Tac. It was fun to do and would really test you and the way you thought out how to attack a map. After a while though things would become predictable to a point.

Fallout3 is a good game on its own, but it really is the "3" that annoys me. This is not the same kind of game like 1 & 2. Turn based vs. FPS cannot be compared. The first you can play with one hand, on your laptop - on your lap and even using the touchpad. The other you cannot. The first can be played even if you have the reflexes of an 80 year old. Battle is not decided by who shoots first  - you know who will act first, so it plays out more like a gameboard with move-counter move.

Bethesda made a good game (post-apocalyptic oblivion), using the excellent world and content already familiar to players and they tried to ride the fame of the Fallout franchise. Fine and dandy, but call the kid by its name, or make one up in this case. Fallout: Tactics is such an example of a Fallout spin-off. They didn't market it as Fallout3.
Mosquito VI - twice the spitfire, four times the ENY.

Here is another one for all of us XCOM fans as well.

http://www.xenonauts.com/index.php

I just found it linked from the XCOM forums over on Steam. Sounds promising for those of us jonesing for a return to old school turn based kicking alien butt games.
