Rudders and throttles... Help me decide...
« on: November 23, 2001, 07:03:00 PM »
Hi!

Well, I've been flying in AH for a couple of months now, but until now, I have been flying with a crap comp. Well, a 300MHz AMD K6-2 equipped with a Matrox Millenium 200MHz just won't cut it...

Well, so now I'm rolling in a brand new AMD XP 1600+ w. 512Mb DDR ram and a GeForceII Ti... and getting framerates between 60-75...

Compared to the 2FPS (which I used to get at takeoff) and 15FPS maximum (doing 640x480 by tweaking the video.cfg file :rolleyes :) - this is suuuure and improvement...

Well, as what I've told you is probably obvious to anyone reading this post, here comes my real question.

At the moment I'm using a Microsoft Sidewinder FF2 for AH. But, I think the throttle doesn't give the proper throttle feeling (the feel of it is like - the upper class way of handling a cup of tea), and the twist rudder is, well I think it would be alot better with real pedals...

So, I've heard about the $130 - Simped-Vario USB pedals, and the $150 - CH Pro Pedals USB... And, I've heard that you can go and buy the cheapest type of racing wheel that's equipped with pedals, and put the wheel in the closet (since I probably won't use the wheel) and then use the pedals as rudders... Well, can you please give me your opinions on those... Would the racing pedals give the same feel? Would the extra money put on the "Flight Sim"-pedals be worth it?

As for the throttle on the MSFF2. I've only read about the CH USB Pro Throttle ($150)...

I would appreciate any opinions and other suggestions for good setups. And, if you know of any good places where these components could be bought, please tell me. Ofcourse I would like to have the cheapest possible, but still I don't want to compromise too much on the feeling.  ;)

(EDIT) BTW. I'm running Windows XP on the new comp. (/EDIT)

Saitek X36 hotta's , with USB Ch Pro Pedals are IMO the "cheapest" for the bestest way to go right now .

sounds like a good one there, but the CH Pro Throttle is almost same price, and I already have a stick that I'm satisfied with...

Anyone got suggestions on rudders? I'm wanting to have real pedals, not the joystick twist one... tired of that...

I am partial to CH stuff. I have a Fighterstick, Pro throttle, Pro rudders (all analog) and they have given me great service for 2.5 years.

i've had the ch pro-pedals(anolog) for a couple years and they're great. also you deffinatly want aircraft type pedals, the mechinism is completly different. car pedals tilt down independently and aircraft pedals slide forward and back (while one goes forward the other goes back)
i've wondered what happens to the car-pedal guys when they push both pedals at the same time.(not possable with aircraft pedals)

Ok get the USB CH Pro Pedals , you won't be sorry in the long run . 98 USD's is what I paid . Got brakes also , v easy to setup in AH .

I bought mine at www.buy.com  , I see u live "over there" don't know if they will ship .

Ok u want to use your stick for sure , didn't read that first post I guess , sorry .

I had a USB Ch Pro Throttle , pretty good but I had some software problems that were my fault I think . Lots here are using it with good success . This way you would have two of the three peices of a complete CH hotta's rig .

Cheaper way would be to find a used analog CH Pro throttle and a cheapo , analog stick on eBay etc . Don't know about speed keys software on XP though . You would only use the cheap stick to set up the throttle in windows then leave in under your desk . Use the Ch Pro throttle , MSFFB stick and , USB CH Pro Pedals . A little cheaper but in the long run , most likly more money .

Car pedals for a flight sim ? Yep they use them , IMO is not the way to go . Cheaper , yes but I am after the "feeling" of flight etc , it would take that away from me .

There's lots of posts here on joysticks etc , just check back . Interesting reading .

take care ,
spro

PS: let us know how it goes ?

YOYO

I use a MSFFB PRO (original) w/CH PRO PEDALS USB.
 Love the setup   :D

If you run your stick thru usb you probably can get away with game port pedals. Just make sure they are pro pedals, so, that you get counter acting slide pedals and toe brakes.

Car pedals work for me just fine.  The only thing they don't have is toe brake ability.  Their a bit closer together but the V3's I use have same sized pedals for both brake and gas so there's no difference in feel.

CH products all the way.  Rudders about 40 dollars, throttle 100, and a chf-16 combat stick about 62 dollars.  Never break...ez to install.....and I'm not using USB on any of them.  Ohh   forgot........windows XP won't allow you to use speed keys for the throttle so use windows 9x as your os.  Also if you are using a cable modem in your usb port...which I am doing with no problems at all........windows XP won't recognize your modem........and gives you a warning message when you install!  So if you're thinking about XP as your OS....do some research.

I'm already running XP and everything seems fine so far... Home-network running fine, and the LAN-internet connection was running even before the first time I logged on to XP... (same thing with Win2K. Win98 had me struggling for about 3 hours to get internet running, and it wasn't running as fast as it is with this setup)...

what's the "speed-keys" that you're talking about? why is it not working in XP? will I need it? will there be a fix for XP, or is it just impossible to run in XP?

I'm thinking I will probalby be getting the USB Pro Pedals, and the Pro Throttle aswell... seems like a nice setup.

btw. is anyone running the Simped-Vario pedals? Are they better than the CH Pro Pedals?
