« on: September 21, 2000, 11:10:00 AM »
Upon booting comp.,Dos reads as normal, then Windows'98 splashscreen comes up and bar at bottom is active, all semms and sounds normal but desktop never comes up ;(.
Just the Windows 98 screen with bottom bar still 'rolling'.
Thx in advance . I'm not very hardware savy-so heres hoping I've done something silly and the fix is obvious

If you hit the ESC key does the screen go away leaving you with a dos mode like screen that looks lik eit waiting for somehting? Do you have DSL or cable modem service? Installed any sofwtare very recently?

 Hi Westy,
As Im at work on a Mac right now I can't check on the ESC key issue.Neg on the DSL nor cable modem.Left comp.on when I went to bed last night, woke up to a black screen(minus my desktop image),but did have the Windows taskbar at bottom of screen.I tried to restart from taskbar ,arrow was movable but would not activate taskbar options.Rebooted and all seemed fine except Windows never opens to my desktop. Will try ESC tonight and report back.
Only recent software was the AH update which installed fine (and was my fave FM yet )
     Thx,

Bytor,

It is often something simple that prevents windows from loading - like a small reg file corruption that according to the error message "could cause windows to report an incorrect hard drive capacity" (God forbid)

 - or some similar prob that is easily fixed, if only you could get into windows or safe mode.

....If you have a start-up disk made, now would be a good time to dig it out. Win98 startup disk has some very good tools in it, far better than the W95 start-up disk.

Using the start-up disk, if I recall correctly, there will be some rudimentary instructions and you will wind up at the "A" prompt. You type "help" or some such to get to the options. Try each tool. You will have to re-boot multiple times.

If you don't have a start-up disk, try to get into Set Up and see what you can see.

Best wishes

I think you can get into SAFE mode by hitting F5 or F8 after the bios screen is shown but just before Windows itself boots up. Then you can scan disk, defrag and trouble shoot the problem.
I thought with dsl or cable modem service you may have been getting hung up awaiting a network conection.
