That scene in saving private ryan when the captain is talking on a small portable radio (ok was about the size of a shoe box), seen it on several other movies, i Believe it had a range of a couple of miles. was that fantasy too?

As for the people in chutes that go all the way to the ground, is it really that common?  I only ask because I see one maybe once a month, if that.  If it happens rarely, then why make a big deal out of it?
