Got 'er covered...

Test tosses went fine today, so I strapped on the camera and tried it on the hi-start.  It was pretty windy today, so I had to wait until dusk for some calm weather.

I had time for 2 hi-start launches.  The launch hook is further aft than I'm used to, and I haven't hi-started a glider in 15 years or so, so I ended up stalling it a bit on each launch.  First launch was up to around 300', second was about 400'.  I should be able to get close to 500' on a perfect launch.

It flies great!  My only complaint is that there's some definite adverse yaw effect.  When I came back inside (I flew in my back yard), I read the directions on this new-fangled radio and found out I can mix the rudder to slave off of the ailerons, so that should cure it!  It's just a matter of figuring out how much rudder to tie in with the ailerons.  I'm trying 59% rudder tied to 100% ailerons for now, we'll see how she goes.  With the on-board camera I can review the films later to see whether that's too much or too little I think.

No lift tonight, it was actually getting kind of dark at the end.  I was chicken to try it in the wind with so little recent experience, new plane, etc...

Nice mtnman, to help with the adverse yaw, use aileron differential. Start with about 20% and adjust as required.
mixing rudder will help to. For those that don't know, using differential in ailerons has the up aileron with more travel than the down aileron. Down aileron produces drag. With a long high aspect ratio wing and ailerons waaaaaaaay out at the tips, you can just imagine the effect.

 enjoy you glider
I read it on the internet, so it must be true !

I slaved the rudder to the ailerons, but I think I'll also dial in some differential on the ailerons.  In the old days, I always did that mechanically, now it's just a matter of clicking around on the radio, hehe!

Thats a really pretty plane! I'd like to get into gliders, but the club i fly at is near a lake so we always have alot of wind.

I hope you don't mind mtnman...

About the Minimoa...there aren't many things that look as pretty and majestic in flight...

NOT mine...but I've been dreaming about something like that. :)

Heck no I don't mind!  Post away!  What better than a thread of sailplanes???

I agree, it's a beautiful plane!  I was (and still am, actually) quite tempted by the "Bird of Time" type planes.  And actually, I was working on a scale model of a soaring redtailed hawk a few years back, I may need to dust off that project again too!

They do, but I've never had problems telling which direction the plane's going (or which end is up) due to silhouetting.  It was also nearly dark for those pictures, which doesn't help.

Monokote, and probably 15 hours or so, total.  Maybe not that long.  I did it in one day sitting in front of the tv, and trimmed it and assembled it the next.

I never did either... until the first time my plane went up to nine-thousand feet or better. When you see airplanes landing at the airport pass under your glider you will know what I mean. If you glance away you may not find that little speck again.

Well, then I guess that begs the question...

Which colors can you see at 9000 ft, so as to eliminate the silhouette effect?

I've had my planes in the clouds, but I just put them into flat spins to get them back lower and then ride the elevator back up!

Threw my Gopro on my Parkzone P51 BL. Right now there is an audioswap in progress, so its not up to high quality rendering yet. But its a ton of fun. Just need to throw a 400 watt motor upgrade in and it'll have unlimited vertical.

Hey, nice plane Mtnman.. never been a fan of flying gliders myself, but they are definitely beautiful and graceful birds.  My tastes run more to the speed stuff.. mainly jets (turbine), Electric Ducted Fans, and pusher prop speed planes...
Thought you might like this video I did, a combination of inflight video, and ground video of a fligt of my Keecat. (Pusher Prop).  Did this video as a tribute to my dad.. we've done htis hobby for 25+ years now, and I did this as a thank you...
