Upgrading my Vid card, how much improv will I see?
« on: January 07, 2002, 08:32:00 AM »
I'm going from a Viper 770 TNT Nvidia 32 meg card to a GAINWARD CARDEXPERT GEFORCE3 TI 200 TITANIUM TV-OUT 64MB DDR (RETAIL).

I read in an earlier post this is a good card? I get around 30-40 FPS on average w/the TNT. I'm hoping this will amke my gaming so much better. Will it?

Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

The answer is "that depends".  If you provide the complete details about the rest of your system, along with your OS version and what settings you run AH at, we can probably give you a better idea.

I would think that should be capable of similar FPS but running at 1600 res.

The answer is: YES!
You will see a HUGE difference, you will be able to run 1600x1200 at 32bit NO SWEAT.

He could, but one can ask why would he want to?

At least I prefer to have fps topped out regardless of the situation (smoke, explosions etc..)

Ti200 will be burdened at 1600x1200 and produce probably around 50-60 fps.

1280x1024x32 or lower in 19" screen is quite enough - at least for me.

If my Geforce 2 GTS 32MB runs 1600x1200x32bit just fine, then the Ti200 will NOT be burdened at 1600x1200 it has enough bandwidth to push AH at that resolution.

Why would he want to? Because it looks better, because the sharpness helps gameplay, and because he CAN.

I've wondered if upping to a nice GeoForce 3 Ti500, the cat's bellybutton of video cards (according to Tom's Hardware) would help my P3 550 along a bit faster.

My Voodoo 5500 is only doing about 12 to 17 in the Main Arena, when the Main isnt warping/overloaded.

But, I suspect the Voodoo would generate better numbers on a faster system.

Any way of taking a current system, replacing the motherboard and CPU and the system load up ok?  Or are we talking total reinstall to have it all work right?

With my Gainward GF3 I run AH at 1600x1200 in 32 bit and it stays steady at 75fps. Drops a bit around smoke, but still smooth.

LePaul,
I recomend you stay with your Voodoo 5 5500 and with the price of a Ti500, upgrade the rest of your system. You will be better of that way. You get a nice  Abit motherboard, Athlon XP, and DDR ram for the price of a Geforce3 Ti500.

Batdog, I have about the same FPS, a little higher, as your 32Mb card running 1600x1200 with 32 bit colors with the Ti200 card.  It’s not over clocked either.  I also have about the same system with the exception of 128Mb more RAM and running ME.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks, Animal

There is a computer show this weekend, Im tempted to grab a motherboard and CPU, but suspect it would be a full install?  I dont recall ever getting away with replacing a motherboard and CPU from under an OS and having some major problems afterward.

Hey Paul, you really should do a new installation of the OS with a mobo/cpu upgrade. Think of it as an opportunity to get your system really lean and fast, with no baggage. Like a B-D5 Jet  :)
