DX8 story for ATI rage users
« on: December 26, 2000, 07:47:00 AM »
For interest and info:-

System Spec
Celeron 500
Intel 440bx M/B
ATI Xpert128 graphics (Rage128 chipset 32mb)
Creative PCI64V sound card.
W98 SE

I recently installed DX8 - my experience of it is good so far but had to fiddle a bit.

At first all appeared ok but shutting down AH gave an illegal operation error and then I had to reboot before I could restart AH. Also RW would not transmit, only recieve.
The clue came when IE5.5 would occassionally crash - lockup needing system reset.
I my experience system lockups are usually video card related so I nipped over to the ATI site and checked out the latest video drivers. I had been using a version from the Special Purpose page - version 6.33cd21e but there appeared to be a better release version - V4.12.6292 ( shown for WinMe and 98). I have downloaded and installed this and all my problems have dissappeared. Frame rates are good and colours appear to be richer to me.
I did have to reinstall RW with Mod C and then change recording from Direct Sound to Wav - I think RW may have a problem with Direct Sound in DX8 but just my feeling on that.
