What's funny about the U.S.S. Constitution is its reliability and very well could become the last operational military ship. Today, all modern ships are largely based on electronics to function. An EMP bomb blast may disable most electronics (including military support vehicles) rendering most of what we depend on today.

I've always wondered why Saddam Hussein never used EMP bombs when things were looking bad.

I think that was sort of my point. Yorktown and the others are NOT still commissioned ships in the US Navy, meaning that their names are available to be reused instead of naming more ships after politicians. At least Nimitz was an admiral, but one Congressman wants to name CVN-79 after Barry Goldwater. WTF? (there's also a petition to make her the ninth Enterprise, which makes a LOT more sense).

I take it that you've never heard of a Faraday cage.

It was believed that Hussein was saving his EMP bombs to use as WMDs  :lol

Gerald ford was a gunnery officer on a carrier in ww2, who saved the lives of many onboard his ship when he helped extinguish fires that broke out on the hanger deck. I think thats worthy of having an aircraft carrier named after you, and being president doesnt hurt.

Survived two assassination attempts for one.

He was the only person not elected to serve as both Vice President and President... and because political discussion is forbidden I cant tell you how lucky we are to have had him then. Carl Albert would have brought in our soon to be law healthcare system back in 1974 in all likelihood. Much of the hatred the press had for Ford at the time was because Nixon nominated Ford and he was confirmed before impeachment could go forward on Nixon. But really Albert was not motivated to push himself into office and the vitriol for Ford just carried forward. For having to put up with all that during his term of office... yes he deserves his name on a carrier.

I would push for it just because of the way he stood up to the CIA during the Warren Commission.

He was President. Seems that right now, the carriers are being named after Presidents now. Would like to see the Navy to reuse the old carrier names on the new class coming up. Keep some tradion alive.

Exactly why Ford did it. A pardon carries the presumption of guilt and is the same as admitting guilt. Even Teddy Kennedy said he was upset at first and then later came to realize it was the best decision for the country.
