First I heard of this, not that I'm in the know or anything, but I watch Weaponology and The Internets, so it surprised me that we're building a new carrier class.  Seems pretty cool, I'm curious about the new catapult system more than anything else.

They've been on on this for a few year. Instead of steam cat's, they are going to use electromaic cat's. Several years ago when the Brits were starting to delevope their new carriers, they wanted to use the elec. cat's instead of steam.

Currently there's no Yorktown, Lexington Hornet, Ranger Constellation or Saratoga. Cowpens and Antietam are cruisers, while Essex and Wasp are amphibious assault ships.

I think Enterprise is the only fleet carrier left whose name follows the historical tradition.

I was thinking the same thing .President Ford rates a dd not a CV IMHO . CV's named after old ships,cruisers after cities , destroyers named after people . The only thing I would leave the same is the boomers named after states as we will never see a BB  again . BTW isn't  the Big E , the next CV to decomission ?

Enterprise is prolly the only name that will always have a ship attached to it. There have been 8 ships named Enterprise(including CV-65). I belong to the USS America Carrier Veterans Association and we lobbied for years to have the class(now known as Ford ) named for the America. Instead , America was given to the lead ship of a new class of LHA(R). If memory serves me right, the ships you mentioned are still listed in the naval registry of ship and therefore cannot assigned to another ship until it is stricken from the registry.

The only ship name that I'm aware of that will never (conceivably) be reused is Constitution. Even Arizona is available for use (there's a proposal for the second Ford-class carrier to be named Arizona, which would make her the first fleet carrier since USS America named following the old tradition). Incidentally, there's actually been more Rangers and Wasps than there have been Enterprises.
