It puts up a stationary target due north so you can test convergence settings and bullet patterns. You follow the .target with a distance for the target, like .target 400, which will put the target 400 yards away. Try a convergence of 250 on a wing-mounted gun package and see what a difference in patterns the distance to target makes.
.target 0 removes the target.
