Lower to 20mm and increase fire rate, that way idiots who sit in them trying to shoot me at 10k dont 1 hit my wing off as im going 500mph to kill some other fighter 2k away from the base please.

If some one hit me at 10K away with a 40mm manned gun, I would give them a congratulatory "Good Shot pal"

I can understand the frustration, but I thought you were above the whine stuff. Everyone gets the golden bb once in a while.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes.

Yesterday I was in a jet low over my own field - shot at a jug and somehow got instant towered - figures the taters hit a friendly on the RW or something but not the plane D50 in front of me.

I enjoy missions leaving a FG up and wreaking havoc.   3k-3.5k shots are kind of easy for me.

Was I in the area? If a fight tends to deteriorate in the area because of a mission, I'll often park just near the spawn and let the mission kill-shoot themselves on me when they try and vulch.

Well gents here is my take on this and it depends on what 37mm HTC has modeled the field guns on:

Russian 37mm (first produced 1939)
6,700 meters (effective vertical) or 4.3 miles or 7327 yards.
3,000 meters (maximum vertical) or 1.86 miles or 3280 yards
9,500 meters (maximum horizontal) or 5.9 miles or 10389 yards

German Flak 43 (37mm) produced from 1943-1945 and was the best version of all german 37mm anti aircraft guns.
4,200 meters (max. effective ceiling) or 2.6 miles or 4593 yards
6,585 meters (max. ground range) or 4.2 miles or 7,520 yards

US 37mm
1371 meter (sective Slant Range) or 0.85 miles or 1,500 yards
3200 meters (Maximum Horizontal Range) or 1.98 miles or 3,500 yards
3200 meters (Maximum Vertical Range) or 1.98 miles or 3,500 yards
2286 meters (Maximum Effective Fire Control Altitude) or 1.42 miles or 2,500 feet

So with that said yes it is possible to hit an aircraft at 10k with a lucky shot.  In the game it appears that it is the Flak 43 that is modeled.  What do you guys say?

I am a field gun / ostie dweeb. so several months ago, i tested max range using .target.. I just kept extending the target until the rounds would no longer pop holes in it..

this is as exact range as I was able to get:

wirb = 1719 yds
ostie = 2767 yds
field gun = 4725 yds

so with field gun, I will start firing at heavy bombers at 5.5k or so, and walk the end of the tracer stream onto them, usually get pings at 4.5.  ostie only fire under 2.5k

this said, I have no idea which gun it's based on.. I know it aint a 40mm bofors (which is looks like), but I had pyro tell me straight up that is a 37mm.. and the ranges i have do not seem to correspond to any numbers you posted. i suppose the flak43, but then, it does not have 7500+ yds ground range.. it's only 4725.. and isn't the flak43 in the ostwind? if so, it needs more range!

Very interest Kvuo, I always thought the Osti could reach out and touch at distances greater than that.  Guess I've been wasting a LOT of ammo. :(

Personally I wouldn't mind a couple of the manned guns being switched over to 20mm, but that is simply due to my own ineptitude in the bigger guns.   :lol

I tested the soft gun recently using (.target) to get a feel for what distances at horizontal ground level the rings on the Ring Sight aproximate. This was based on lining the aim point up with the ground resulting in a cannon round punching a hole in the target just above(+-12" at range) where the ground cuts off the target. Past 3000 yards zoom with the soft gun cannot show you hits on the target. Or at least with my video card. NVIDIA GTX 275. 1680x1050 32bit. Default FOV.

Center of Rings - 500 yards.
First ring down - 1500 yards.
Second down - 3000 yards.

I know you can hit cons with the soft gun as long as they are in ICON range. I received a PM once rudely complimenting my game hack because one of my lucky rounds took the tail off of the PMers F6f just short of 6k away. 3.5k as a maximum premeditated range to hit a bomber is more realistic. Fighters are better engaged 2k and shorter coming towards your location. And lead shots as they pass to about 1k out.

Engaging GV's out to about 4 or 5k is another aquired skill. You have to range fire streams and watch the impact then adjust. If the GV is in motion it's just like manning the 40mm batteries on a CV. Zoom with the soft gun creates unique challenges in judging your impact streams past 3500 yards. The Ring sight itself will cover up your view part of the time of the ground impact site. So you fire a few rounds and pull the sight to the side and watch.
