Brand name of GeForce 2 you would recommend?
« on: March 12, 2001, 02:09:00 PM »
Okay, the thread below convinced me to do some vid card upgrading.

Which Geforce 2 -32 meg card you recommend, and which brand should I most definately stay away from? Or does it matter?

I've seen Abit, Guillimot, etc...not sure which is best, or different, etc.

I don't know too much about them, but I would probably buy Creative's.
Asus sounds good too.
Guillemots at least has had best GTS GF2 (or was it ultra),though, that can be seen in the price as well.
I don't know about their MX cards, how those are.

As far as GeForce 2 cards go rip, If your not going to invest in something thats off the base board design (faster mem/more memory/ higher clock speeds) then it really doesnt matter IMHO which card you use. However, *INHAAAAAAAALE* If you want to shop around and look for the best fps/$$ there are a few things to keep in mind one being the GeForce3 , its expensive but its the best available, going lower we have the GeForce2 ultra/pro/GTS/MX respectively in decending order, which will range from $550 to $75 not counting the GF3. The large price range is due to the fact that there are many configurations of these cards, 64mb Ultra's to 12mb MX's, clock speeds differ as well as the latency of the memory chips being used. I wouldn't suggest the MX if it's for the purposes of a "Gamers upgrade" for that I would go no less than a 32mb GTS $250-$175 I've found the best price listings at  www.pricewatch.com  if your not afraid of buying online. I don't think I would recommend a 64mb card, the amount of memory in most cases is not the bottleneck, its the latency of the memory, if you do wanna spring for a higher card make sure you look for the latency of the memory the lower the better 5.5ns is the lowest right now (it could be lower) otherwise it's not worth the cost to just pay for more mem. I hope this helps.

Leadtek makes a great card.  Monster heatsink on it and it includes the software to overclock it.

 I'm now running the Asus V7700. 32DDR
Very nice card, blows my old TnT2 32 meg card away.
You will not regret the upgrade to the GForce2.

Looks pretty sweet Rip.  I don't think you can lose on these since nVidia supports the cards with their Det. drivers, so you don't need to worry about the vendor as much.

I say go for it.

Leadtek: Overclocking card.
eVGA:    Comes with 5.5ns DDR RAM (effectively a Pro card) and a value card.

Okay, last min. I changed to Leadtek "Pro" which (as mentioned above) allows overclocking. $164 bones...otw in 3 days!

I'll post the bench mark I use in AH, the diff between my old Ultra TNT2 (26 FPS in the "B17 in Hangar with Clipboard" benchmark) and the new card.  I'm hoping for at least a 25% increase in FR.

One more question, Leph, maybe you can answer this: When the card arrives, I imagine I should probably update the drivers as soon as I get the card installed, no?  Where is the best drivers (Detonaters?) website?

Wait for the G3 to become widely available, then go for a 64 MB G2, because they will have significantly dropped in price.

Best place for Detonator drivers is ofcourse nVidia but I've also found "leaked" or "unpublished" drivers at  www.planetgeforce.com . I also have the Leadtek....good choice.
