voodoo 5 bug recognizing one chip? gatt you there?
« on: January 01, 2001, 08:17:00 PM »
hello there tryin out a voodoo card ( pci ) i know it was cheap , i got aufull frame rates so i came to this board and found this reference.

"Hblair,
watch out, theres a nasty bug in Voodoo5 drivers installation. Sometimes the system reads the card as a simple 3Dfx Voodoo and not as a 3Dfx Voodoo 5500. After drivers installation you have to check carefully in the control panel/system. If the card is seen as a simple 3Dfx Voodoo you will have only 1 chip working and not two. This happens VERY often." quoteing  gatt

ok checks out as my problem what the heck do i do to fix it ? anyone ever had this one

thanks in advance

p.s. how to i get rid of old display drivers ? frome prefious vid cards,

downloading new drivers now

remove all video drivers via device manager, reboot and add new drivers SHOULD do it.

u could set to standard vga driver.
then go through your registry removing any and all references to 3dfx, glide, and anythin else related.

Also do a find files on the system and remove.

The latest V5 drivers work on V3's so it may not be much of an issue anymore.
BTW towd, don't use the drivers that came with the card..

Guys, a good process to follow when replacing a video card.

1.  Un-install current drivers.
2.  Remove the device drom Device Manager.
3.  When Windows detects the card, force it to use the "standard VGA" driver.
4.  Install New Card.
5.  Install new drivers.

I think I have that process right.  Failing that you'll have to comb the registry for crap as towd mentions.

I've heard if you "update driver" under device manager and point it back to your voodoo dir, it will install correct driver. Haven't tried it myself

In device manager my V5 5500 PCI is showing as a 3Dfx Voodoo Series. Is that the way it's supposed to read? I thought at one point it actually said Voodoo5?

So I went and uninstalled the driver first, then I went through the registry and deleted every key field that had 3dfx, glide or voodoo in it. Rebooted and it installed the same damn thing.

Is this right Towd?

that is what i did and it seems to work . but for some reason i get the error in d3dim but it dosent seem to effect the game . also the guy said the beta drivers 1.04.01 are less problematic .

the card i have is pci so i dont know how much that effects it . but with the slower memory i find that 1000x700 is much faster than the higher res but it is a slight improvment over my v3 2000, not really worth the cash i think. once again mine is pci so maybe that is the reason .

Yes, mine shows in device mangler as "3dfx Voodoo Series".

Don't worry about device mangler too much.  Go to your video properties (right-click on the desktop and choose properties) and then to the settings tab.  It should tell you what monitor and video card you have there and it will say Voodoo 5 5500.  Now hit the advanced button and go to the "3dfx Anti-Aliasing" tab.  Make sure you have it set to 2x FSAA for both Open GL and Direct3D.  You can turn it to "fastest" or "single chip" in there, so make sure it's set where you want it.  I use 2x FSAA everywhere, so that's what I reccomend.

Never buy products from a company that goes under.   Geforce 2's were better from the beginning anyway.   Good luck to all you 3dfx suckers.   (take it like a joke please  )

"Geforce better"

Grforce's FSAA is apalling, I tried both out at comp USA, I bought both and said I would return the one that I did not want, The Fe-Force was nice but once I put in the V5 the ge-force showed what i pile of toejam it was as FSAA,
V5 is top of the heap now, thats why Nvidia bought 3dfx, because they knew they would never be able to beat 3dfx's graphic.  Now they buy it so they can diddly it up

Sorry Towd, didnt check this forum for long time. Anyway, be sure that after:
- Right click on desktop
- Properties
- Settings
- Advanced
- Card
shows you card as a 3Dfx 5500.

Now I use the GeForce2-GTS, much faster than the Voodoo 5500, at least on my PIII-800. 3DFx's FSAA is much better but it does strange things on my system.
