Tankers Nightmare...

after a solid hour of cruising at that blistering overground speed of 27 knts...
you'd mapped your route well, 95% flatland.
Ridges for only the last 1k or so..

you know yer getting close.... yer almost within a decent gun range, time to find "The Spot", hull down behind a ridge, so's you're harder to spot. and even harder to kill... but with a nice overview of the vehicle/plane spawn point that is your target.

FERGET it!!!!!

Everyone and their brother in at least 2 sectors area knows exactly where ya are.

If not the ground units out to 8 k because of the icons...  then the honkin big black dot ya are, that can be seen from 18k out in the air....

(perhaps it's my imagination, but are tank dots actually larger than plane dots currently? until you get closer to them?)

I think ground units should have a 1.5k, (if observing unit, (Ground or air) is moving)-2.5k (if observing ground unit is stopped), maximum range before being so noticable. ie icons don't show until then. (granted how ya gonna hide a yellow/brown tank on all that green, LOL)

Would make for much more intense watchful ness.. (who knows whats lurking behind that ridge you're passing...  hehe)

I can understand low flying aircraft moving at 120knts-250knts not being id'd till 3.0k,
but ground units moving at these slow blistering speed of less than 30 knts will tend to catch you're eye a LOT less.

I'd like to see some other workable suggestions, rather than rants.....

Other than that, I'm tickled pink with v1.02..
Luv the limited Bombsight zoom now... will be a lot less 40k bombers. (hard to see all targets from 25k now...)

Can't wait for the squad Nose art of v1.03

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. I had wondered how HTC would handle the icon issue for ground vehicles. I'm very glad there isn't a red neon "HERE I AM!" sign over the panzer's head, but it would be nice if the dot range could be reduced a bit for the armour.

I think the vehicle icons might be better should they  be visible at 3k or less. The dot is already able to be seen from beyond icon range now but that's ok.
To be honest gound forces really need a fighter CAP of thier own and they need to be mixed about 2 halftracks and 1 tank. And stay close together for the halftrack's anti air capability, but not so close they all go up with one rocket attack.

WOW GREAT IDEA GREYBEARD!!!! BEST I HEARD

Man, your idea got me exicted, yes tanks and vehicles should be harder to spot if they are not moving, in fact in the desert the germans had a great time with dug in 88's, with the haze of the desert along the hot desert floor it was hard to spot the Germans, the 88's could open up at close range .I agree that the ranges to spot vehicles should be lower and lower if they are not moving.  In fact make it possible so that you can choose to sit and wait and open up from a few hundred yards out if they dont spot you.

Few things would have to be worked out like if you are moving and decide to stop you dont lose the tag if enemy is withing a certain distance from you, that way guys are not exploiting the system by stopping and going

Ya . I took off a goon to take a field last night and turned back because there appeared to be 3+ low cons comming right at me. It was tanks 20k away or so...

if the plane or tank or halftrack is below a ridge its icon should not be visible

that would rock if it wasnt

Hi all,
Although a contentious issue I would like to suggest that if the tank is stationary and it's engine turned off it's tag should only be visable from about 1K The dot is big enough to spot from much further anyway.

I wonder wheres all the trees and shelters to hid a tank in

Wouldn't it be a nice to place your M16 few miles away from enemy airfield and then hunt from the woods, without being caught unless you fire or someone with sharp eyes sees you.

Kind of silly that I see some stationary M16 from 15k and +10 miles away. lol.

I hope we get houses and other objects which in or behind we can hide our vehicles from direct fire...

Actually Citabria, it is well documented that friendly aircraft attacked friendly ground columns on a fairly regular basis. (hard to ID, not where they were supposed to be etc.), so I'd tend to disagree with the friendly icons showing at a longer range than an enemy's.

Snafu,, the engine being on or off shouldn't affect visual sighting, (unless head gaskets bad, or sumpin')      but stopped or moving makes a BIG differance in visual cues..
If your moving, it draws the eye so to speak.
Stationary you are much less likely to be seen.

Thank You JFalk..

I agree Fishu,,  but I figure more villes' and stuff are future eye candy, but I'd sure like to see 'em sooner

Just hope Natedog or Superfly are bz working on ROADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and Bridges....,
and arty, and.....

Oh yeah and the tanks should leave dust cloud behind them after they go over about 10mph or so.

Heh... perty good idea JoeMud re icon range. Sounds about right to me. I figure the only way I should be able to locate vehicles at 3.0+ is if somebody gets on the horn and *tells* me their location.

ie., either a countrymate tells ya where zactly the con be... or ya stumble upon it accidently at a range of -2k~

All good ideas!

Definately get rid of their 'black dot', big give away. I personally would like to see them do away with all ground vehicle icons. If your hunting them, your low looking and they are not to difficult to spot. If they need to be seen at all, they should only show on radar, and only show up when they are within field radar range. This would make them a viable field attack option, give them some 'invisibility' while they are enroute to target, and also add more realism. Wouldn't it be great to see a big bunch of cons on radar in a sector(big tank attack force) and have to send out recon flights to locate them before they get within radar(attack range). Would also give us a good reason to send advance recon/attack force to take out the radar at a field before a major attack.

Also, I think when field radar is hit, all radar in that sector goes down, hiding all enemy forces and forcing recon flights(if your country wants to keep the field that is). Would be a good compromise between Aces current radar system and WB's no radar unless in tower.
