advice..

Okay... I'm an eng tech and work in the telecom field, ie PBX's, Microwave, DACS, 800mhz..bla bla bla but I've never really messed with a  homevPC as far as hardware on my own. I get enough troubleshooting at work and try to avoid it at home, lol. Anyway I want to upgrade my PC processor from a 500mhz amd k6-2(?) to a 800mhz or so. I also have only 64m of ram and wish to upgrade that as well.

What all would be involved... new mother board... ? If I want to just add more RAM do I need anything else but the ram? Perhaps there is a good book on "how to not fry your pc while upgrading?"

Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

K6 was quite powerfull in office use but in gaming it was slower than Pentiums even when it was new.
There are other topics in this UBB which are full of good advices and as far I can see you might want to build a new system with AMD Thunderbird cpu.

Adding memory doesn't require anything more than throw new chip inside your pc and put power on. Check what kind of memory your old chip is, It might be too slow for 100/133bus new processors are using if your going to build a new pc.

The problem with upgrading from AMD K6-2 500 is that there is nothing worth buying that will fit the socket7 format.  So yes, a new mother board would be necessary.
Now the question is...What type of case do you have?
If the answer is some OEM name such as Dell, then you are almost starting from scratch.
If you have a scratch built tower, then the format is important.  Is it AT, ATX etc.  If it's ATX, then you are in good shape.
Now, what kind of power does it have?  You want 300W Min. if you move to a Thunderbird 850 or higher.
If you check some of the other posts in this forum, you will find links to some great sources for hardware.
If you have a decent size/speed hard drive, then you should be set with your other components unless your Video and or Sound is on board, then you will need a Video/Sound Card.
Transfering all the stuff should be a snap for someone with your experience.

Okies..thanks guys. Looks like I might go with a new motherboard, cpu, etc. It'll be a learning experience. Thanks for the advice!
