Thoughts on the new Kyro II Vid Card?
« on: March 16, 2001, 07:10:00 AM »
So what are the thoughts on the new Kyro II Video Card coming out soon.  Base price $149.99.  Read an article that it stacks up pretty good against the GeForce2 GTS and Ultra.

Wouldit be a good card for AH?
Rock:  Ya see that Ensign, lighting the cigarette?
Powell: Yes Rock.
Rock: Well that's where I got it, he's my son.
Powell: Really Rock, well I'd like to meet him.
Rock:  No ya wouldn't.

Swager, you read my mind!

I just saw that article last night at www.anandtech.com  and was thinking the same thing.

Judging by it's overall performance specs I've come to a couple conclusions:

1.  It will either be incredibly fast or incredibly slow in AH.  (My guess is fast.)

2.  There is a very real possibility that the current drivers will exibit graphics problems in AH.  Judging by the Mercedes Benz Truck Racing results with the tire tracks being messed up, AH gunfire effects, tracers, bomb craters, will likely get messed up.

3.  I don't believe AH makes use of the Z-buffer (except that beta setting to turn it on for 3d glasses).  This *might* cause problems.

I'm almost tempted to try it.  If it works it will almost certainly be as fast as the GF 2 Pro.  If it doesn't, well then I'll take it back.

I'm hoping someone here has $120 to test it.  (That's the price they are selling for on www.anandtech.com  little price list for this week.)

I'm concerned about driver support.  nVidia backed up top quality cards with excellent driver support. We'll see with the Kyro

I'll bet it is terrible for game not optimized for PowerVR chipsets.

I had a PowerVR Matrox card, it was blazing fast for PVR games.... it was atrocious for D3D. <Warbirds>
