Time for Allied formations of bombers to have torpedos.
« on: July 30, 2010, 10:58:36 PM »
In particular the B26. The axis have the ability to shoot off as many as six torpedo's & as little as three per one AHII pilot per formation of bombers. Where as right now the allies only have the chance to up one plane & one torpedo at a time.

I had posted this thread in the aircraft & vehicles forum.

 http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,285568.0.html

I think it is substantial enough to justify having torpedo's included to the B26. Even though they were only frequently used by the Allies.

Sure!  :aok

I dont see the purpose of it unless we get a long range torpedo sight.

Would only be really apllicable in special events. Used like a Ki-67.

Based off the RAF link of 14 squadron they used a primitive site like I think we have now on our B26 in game & they got within 800 yards & let it rip. Granted not much use with our current fleet system your going to get shot down 99 times out of 100. I think supply convoys will appear one day & the torpedo aircraft will see a rebirth in game I believe.

The USAAF didn't start to use long range torpedo sights until the testing of the glide torpedo at the tail end of the war.  The B-26s that actually dropped torpedos during Midway and Aluetians didn't have them.  They had to get real close in, so close that one of the B-26s at Midway actually flew over lengthwise the flight deck of an IJN carrier, strafing as they went past.

Sort of. From what I read from the factory one or all models were built with the possibility for it to happen but to make it happen they had to take the bomb bay doors off to fit the torpedo in with the western Allies. Even then it was sloped with it's nose pointing down as it would not fit all the way in. The Russians mounted two huge torpedo's on the bottom side of there A20G's so no need to mess with the bomb bay.

We need this... sure... But not as much as we need a Ta-152C-0, a XP-58 Ascender, an unarmed Fiesler Storch, etc....

IMO it's like the folks that cry about the Soviets not having 4-engine bombers, or the Germans not having a B-24 equivelant.

It's not a 1-1 exchange ratio. Different air forces did different things, and aside from a few pipe dreams, a few stalled attempts, some sides did things the others did NOT do.

Frankly the allied side used torpedo/dive bombers, NOT level bombers. Why they NEED a formation you have yet to explain. For any historical use it's absolutely useless. For MA purposes it's also useless since we already have the Ju88 and Ki67 with formations enabled.

Did you read the link on RAF 14 squadron & it's usage of the B26 & torpedo's? They used them in that squadron for about two years. Now if your talking about formation's only & why? Well we have the option to do so with the B26 as with the KI67 & the JU 88. if torpedo's were to be added I don't see why not on a formation of them.

A book I ordered arrived today on RAF 14 Squadron & it has a lot more info about the torpedo usage. I stand corrected on my previous post in terms of actual time usage of torpedo's it appears they only used them for approximately 2 months. Also posted some stats on their success with them.

My apologies to Krusty for my prior post if offended. :aok

After reading some more of this book it may fall under field modification? Since they used English torpedo's & had to use their own rack.

The caption would imply to me that the modification was for the British torpedo's, not torpedo's in general.

(Image removed from quote.)

Doesn't have be a field modification.  The Brits could have received the Havocs with the US torpedo setup and then converted them to UK specifications after receiving them and before handing them out to operational units.
