I've never seen this before???
« on: May 24, 2001, 02:25:00 AM »
My new machine has win98SE, OS/2, win2Kpro, and linux all bootable.
All work with the following single glitch.  Sometimes when I am booted in win2kpro the machine will just reboot??? It doesn't freeze, drop to the desk top, give any error message, nuttin! It just spontaneously reboots. Did it once while I was reading the manual and hadn't touched the keyboard or mouse for a number of minutes.
Any ideas on this one?

Wow, I'm dual booting with win98 FE and win2kpro sp1.  I've never seen that.

Do you get the "Windows is saving settings" or is it just an instant reboot?  If so, you *might* have some bad ram possibly.  Out of all your OSs win2k probably pushes ram the hardest.  I think there are freeware ram testing programs.

Just a instant reboot. I just installed 1.5 gig of mushkin cas 2 pc133 ram. Norton super do everything pack says all is well, ram ok, no overheating, etc etc.  I'll pull the ram and reseat it and see if that has any effect.
thanx for the hint.
Good grief sp1 I dont even have the basic working as I would like yet, will check that also.

Sounds like hardware problem to me..

You didn't say what your other setup was..
Did you overclock the computer?
How much RAM does your motherboard support? =)

Etc etc.

Machine is not overclocked.
The entire setup and usages are in the "windos guru's a question" posted by me bout 18 threads down.
I reinstalled the ram and it has just rebooted twice in the last hour?  Last week I had OS/2 rendering movie footage for 3 days without a shutdown of any type.  I have had both 98SE and linux running for hours at a time with no probs. This one has me stumped, I can not find any reference to such a prob on the web.
I'm gunna catch some zzz's now.
All suggestions welcome.

Ive had the same problem. Win98 just rebooting on its own..

It is hardware, i had to move my PCI cards around till the problem was solved..

Takes time but it will work.

Dog out,.....

Could it be a power supply issue?  Just a thought.

BTW, the "express" install for Win2k SP2 is much smaller.  You only need the 101 Megger if you want to save it somewhere and be able to update any version of Win2k from it.

I suspect ACPI enabled or a power problem btw.

Two things occur to me:

1 - It could be a heat problem.

2 - Check your CPU for damage to one of the memory addressing pins. I had a very similar problem years ago and it was caused by the 32 MB pin being faulty - as soon as the PC tried to use memory above 32 MB, it crashed.
