Brand new Lenovo laptop!
« on: August 05, 2010, 09:59:21 PM »
I bought a G555 today, has better specs than my tower or my old VAIO.

My sister seems to think Lenovo's are crap though as she hasn't had any luck with them. I've done my research and it all checks out.

What do you all think about Lenovo laptops? Any bad experiences?

Decent laptops but they have sporadic issues, less than some and more than others. Expect the hard drive to fail at some point within 18-24 months, unless you never move it. Ventilation is generally inadequate. The monitors are not known for good quality, but they are durable. Some models weren't known to work well with docking stations and power management.

Keep your eyes on the bios updates available, there is always something they find to fix.

Get rid of the IBM/Lenovo bloatware they install.

We switched to them for work about a year ago.... we had app. 1500 of them and they have all been replaced with Dell's again as we had nothing but problems with them under heavy use the seam to have issues. I had mine for 4 months before it was replaced with a Dell.  in the first week the HD was replaced, then the Screen, around 3 months the CPU died, and then the memory......

of the +/- 1500 we had with in the first 6 months more than half had issues and were replaced by Dell's

We have baught about 100 of the lenovo tablets for faculty to use in the classroom.  I have only had to service one of them in almost 2 years, replaced the screen, and that was because a faculty member dropped it and cracked the LCD.  Lenovo did replace it as a warranty item, which really surprised me.  Granted our people are not major power users, but they change hands often and have held up well.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a lenovo thinkpad, since those are high quality carryovers from lenovo's acquisition of IBM's laptop business.  But the other lenovo laptops are no different than any other inexpensive line of laptops.  Nothing terrible that I've heard of, but nothing special either.  The thinkpads are 100% field serviceable though, so they are designed to be able to be taken apart and put back together with no tools other than one of those little geeky clip-on screwdrivers.  I have an older thinkpad T-41p and I've stripped it down twice, once to upgrade the cpu and then 2 years later I had to replace the cpu heatsink/fan unit.  Both procedures were pretty simple due to the smart and durable construction of the thinkpad.  The hard drive died after about 5 years but otherwise the computer is still running great and it took windows 7 without any problems.

I have read that lenovo lcd screens are nothing special, but I have only the T-41p to judge from, and it has been fine for me.

Lenova used to be junk as did Acer, and many others. It seems that these brands have been trying (and succeeding) in improving the quality of their machines. I bought my daughter an Acer laptop(I would have never considered Acer a few years ago), have had it for a year. No issues at all.

Anyone else had experience with the laptops from lenovo?

We use Lenovo laptops at work and they're a major step up from the Thinkpads we were using prior.

I work for IBM and have been using Thinkpads for 15 years now. When we owned the Thinkpads, there was a quality issue with some of the parts and mostly with the harddrives. Since Lenovo has taken over (we are still required to use "Thinkpads"), I have noticed the quality has improved greatly. I currently use a T-60 (for 2 years now) and before that I had a T-40 (for 3 years) and I have never had to replace anything and my boxes get used an average of 10 hours a day ... every day. With the T-60, I occasionally have to clean out the fan and fan vent area, but as eagl has pointed out all I need is a simple screwdriver and in 10 minutes all is clean and back together.

I work in a group of around 30 people and most of us travel quite a bit, and all around the world, and I can say with certainty, that these boxes are road warriors. A couple of people have spilled their drinks on the jet all over their keyboard which caused problems, but with new keyboards overnight-ed to their hotel, they were up and running in no time.

I have a friend who sent 2 boys thru college with Thinkpads (same Thinkpad for 4 years) on my recommendation and each of them said that their Thinkpads were work horses and tough as nails ... where their friends had to practically buy new laptops every year.

Good of you to bring that up Oakranger.

The laptop's for school, so I was wondering how heavy the T-series thinkpads are. If I just muscle it out, can I bring it to school everyday?

I think the T series laptops have always been right around 5 lbs depending on what size battery you have installed and what you have installed in the expansion bay, not too bad considering the quality construction.  For my T-41, if I didn't need an optical drive, I could swap in a second hard drive or a second battery.  The battery would of course weigh a lot more than either the optical drive or another hard drive, but it would have nearly doubled battery life.
